I went in for a routine prenatal appointment yesterday at 37 weeks 5 days. BP was up along with a headache, eye floaties, and ringing in ears all while taking BP meds so doc sent us to L&D and decided at this point it was best to go ahead and induce. I was at -1, 1cm, 0%effaced so we started cervadil at 1pm yesterday. I was hooked up to a BP cuff, baby heart monitor, and contraction monitor off and on all day. I went to the bathroom around midnight and the cervadil fell out at that time. The nurse came in at 1am and checked me I was still 1cm, but 50% effaced. She hooked me back up to the monitors until 3am when I was transferred to the LDRP room to start pitocin. At that point I was at 3cm and 70% effaced. I was feeling contractions, but they were not too bad.
I dosed in and out for a few hours getting woken up every 15-20 minutes to find babies heartbeat on the monitor again because it kept disappearing due to movements. My OB showed up around 8am and checked me again, at this point I was still at 3cm and 70% effaced so they continued to up my pitocin and also inserted an internal heart monitor so I could move without the external monitors slipping off of baby. Around 10am my nurse checked again and I was 4cm dilated and about 80% effaced. At this point the contractions were picking up and starting to get pretty painful so I decided to go ahead and get my epidural.
The anesthesiologist came in my room around 10:45am and got the epidural in. DH turned pale white from the way he was standing and almost passed out then about 2 minutes later my chest started hurting, everything got really bright, and I almost passed out. My BP had gone from 150/97 to 102/58 causing me to feel extremely faint. The anesthesiologist backed off the meds for a bit to make sure I was ok, he was afraid he had hit a vein which caused a mass amount of the pain meds in my system all at once. After I was feeling better he checked everything and determined it was in the appropriate spot and started the meds back up. I did fine after that, so they are guessing the faint feeling spell was due to a drastic BP drop.
By the time my epidural was in it was close to noon so the nurse told me she was going to run and get lunch and that the other nurses had been informed of my drastic BP drop and would keep an eye on me while she was out. I told DH to go get himself something to eat at that point as well. My BP continued to stay low and I started to feel nausea. I informed the nurse of this when she came in to check me again around 1pm. I was 5cm dilated and still at about 80% effaced. DH had an appointment with the insurance adjuster from the hit and run I was in a few weeks ago and I told him to go ahead and run down the road for it instead of rescheduling. The nurse then did a cath which resulted in 1000cc of urine being emptied from my bladder, once my bladder was empty I started feeling much better; my BP went back to a normal range and the nausea went away. Since I was flat on my back the nurse decided to recheck me and confirmed I was at 5ishcm and 80% effaced. She then had me lay on my left side for a bit since I had been on my right side for a couple hours.
The nurse hung out in my room and caught up on charting while DH was away to make sure I was doing ok. I was starting to feel contractions again at this point and I had some feeling in my feet and legs. I told the nurse this and she said it was totally normal. DH returned around 2:30pm and made a quick bathroom run. When he returned to the room, I told him that my epidural was not working and that I had told the nurse this already. I was in tears by this point with the pitocin turned up to 18. I wax also feeling a lot of pressure so I paged the nurse. She entered the room at 2:50pm and checked me. I was 100% and ready to go. She attempted to give me another dose of the epidural, but it didn't have time to kick in. The doc came in the room a little before 3 and I started pushing at 3pm.
Dana Kaylee was born at 3:04pm after 3 pushes. I ended up doing it without the epidural and had not tearing which meant no stitches. She weighed in at 7lbs 15oz and 21" long. They cleaned her off a bit and brought her to me for breast feeding. She latched immediately and drained both sides. We are both doing great!
TLDR: Dana Kaylee born at 3:04 pm 7/3/2014, 37+6 weeks. Weighed 7lbs15oz and was 21" long. Went from a medicated birth to drug free due to a faulty epidural.
ETA: picture of baby girl, she loves her hands!
