Is this too much at this age?

I came across this article/video and wanted to get some thoughts on it. Watching the video I think gives more perspective than the actual article. Thoughts?

  • I feel like football in Texas is on a totally different planet than football in the rest of the world... I guess that I do like the idea of teaching kids to push themselves to give their best effort every time they are on how field.

I agree. There were some valid points to what he said. Everything in life is a competition. Well almost everything. Being able to push yourself is a huge feat. I wouldn't like my son's coach to be screaming at him in the face or telling him to push the other player on his back. That I wouldn't wouldn't be happy with.

  • I agree that football in TX and other southern areas (Panhandle FL) is a different beast. I get that, but 6? IMO, most 6 year olds are not emotionally ready to handle a lot off that. 10, teenager, sure. But 6?

Well, those were the 9 year olds that he was talking to like that. No clue if he talked to them like that when they were 6. I have seen our 9 year old neighbor be talked pretty severely during baseball. We were on a 3 year old church team for soccer and one of the teams we played had a psycho coach. I told Matt that we would have pulled James if we were on that team. James' personality right now would not handle that. He is not very competitive driven and gets discouraged if playing with people that are. So, yeah, this team would not be for us. But I know other kids can handle that and probably thrive on the tough love from a coach.

My only real problem was the "do whatever it takes to put him on his back". That isn't helpful coaching in my mind.

  • Missed the 9 part. Saw that the kids started tackle at 6. My cousins have been told to do whatever it takes to put them on their back. That doesn't bother me as much. Maybe because I assumed that was the norm?

This should NOT be the norm.  Most schools should be adopting the Heads Up approach to tackling that is recommended now which teaches a specific technique to use to avoid head injury for both players.  FIL coaches high school football and they are under a lot of scrutiny on how they teach, regardless of how the players act on the field.  When looking at kids this age, that should definitely be the focus.
