1st Trimester

Only 2 weeks & started my period?

So, I have heard that it's not incredibly uncommon to have a "period" while pregnant, especially in the early months. I am VERY early as you can see only about 2-3 weeks along (my husband & I have been trying, so I was taking tests every so often to check). I started my period just 2 days after taking the pregnancy test, the cramps were a little worse than they normally would be & I am concerned.. I don't think it was a miscarriage, but I am just curious if anyone else has ever had this or could give me some advice? I looked it up & saw that a lot of women with this similar experience that went to the doctor were told to go on bed rest for a couple days with their feet up, so I did that all weekend just to be safe ( even though I have not gone to the doctor yet ).

Re: Only 2 weeks & started my period?

  • That's why I put period in quotation marks. & All I know is I took 2 pregnancy tests about a week & a half before & they were both negative & then a week & a half later it was positive, I am only guessing I am about 3 weeks pregnant since it was so soon after.

  • I got 3 positive tests last Wednesday.
  • The "clock" starts at the first day of your last period.  Meaning, let's say the first day of your LMP was May 19th.  You would now be 5 weeks pregnant.  I hope that helps a little.

  • It does! Thank you, it is difficult to say because I have such an irregular period, but that does help, first timer here, so I am a little bit clueless. haha

First, I'm sorry you are dealing with this. It does sound like you may have some confusion about how your cycle works. A few questions: When was your last period? How long are your cycles, usually? Do you know when you ovulated?
If it is around the time your period would be due and you are pregnant, the bleeding *could* be a sign of a chemical pregnancy (early miscarriage), but not necessarily.
    Good luck!
Eta, I see SSCmomma was able to help you with the dates before I could post :)

  • My last period was in early May, not sure of the exact dates. They usually last 4-6 days. I am not sure when I ovulated & I certainly hope that's not what it was because we are so excited :/
  • I think I may take another pregnancy test in, say, a week or two to see if it is still positive.
  • It is not uncommon to have bleeding in early pregnancy and carry on to have a healthy pregnancy. I had bleeding with both a chemical and a healthy pregnancy so I really hope you get good news. Good luck!

  • A home pregnancy test isn't a very reliable way to confirm that you are "still" pregnant, as hcg levels can sometimes linger for weeks even after a miscarriage. I would put in a call to your OB especially since you aren't clear on dates. See what they suggest. Best of luck.
