How awful is induction? I'm in PUPPP hell...

So I'm 38 +5 today, and I've had PUPPP for about a week now. For those of you unfamiliar with PUPPP, it's the most miserable rash ever (times 100). I've had poison ivy, poison oak, head lice, chicken pox, etc, and this is worse than all of that combined. It's all over my arms, legs, abdomen and spreading by the minute. I spent 4+ hours crying today, because I'm so damn itchy.

I'm headed to the dermatologist tomorrow, as everything I've tried so far is doing nothing...oatmeal baths, baking soda, benadryl, hydrocortizone and then prescription strength hydrocortizone. From what I've read, there isn't much of a solution, except delivering the baby, and then some people still have it for weeks or months postpartum.

So my question for you second time moms is this. How awful is induction? I'm losing my mind right now, and it has been suggested that maybe induction is the best option. I think that option kind of sucks, but maybe not as I sink further into PUPPP depression hell...

  • I would explore any and all options with your doctor before induction, if your body or baby isn't ready to deliver you could end up stuck on your back on pitocin (and still itchy) for days.

  • My induction was tough but at least that is why God gave us epidurals. I'd probably want to be induced if I had PUPPP that bad too, it's awful even in a mild case. Do you know if your cervix is favorable? That is something to consider in your decision. GL, I hope you get some relief soon.

  • Just wanted to say so sorry you're dealing with this. PUPPP looks like it has to be awful.

My induction was about 35 hours from cervadil to delivery. It was slow-going, but I still delivered a healthy baby vaginally. PUPPS sounds awful. I would probably be begging for an induction.

  • I hope your dermatologist has some other things for you to try.  When I was pregnant the first time there was a PUPPP discussion and there were a few women who suggested using a Pine Tar soap.  You can find it at a Whole Foods store or GNC.  You can get it online also.  I think the brand I used was Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap.  Just a warning though, it smells exactly like a campfire, so you will have a smoky smell.  Might be worth a shot?

  • My induction was long, about 36 hours from start to finish. I did end up with a c/s but it was because I have a narrowing pelvis, so that has nothing to do with the induction. Even though it was long, my induction was not bad. I never needed pitocin to induce, they started with cervadil and then used a balloon catheter which was all I needed to get the ball rolling. I was able to move around until I got the epidural.

  • My induction was 17 hours from cervadil until DS was here and my cervix was not favorable. I was on the brink of pre-e with increasing levels of protein and high bp so induction was best thing for both of us at the time. I had a very easy labor and delivery which I realize is not the norm, especially for first time moms. PUPP sounds like a pita, here's hoping for relief soon!

  • My induction went very quickly and smoothly. I started to progress around 8am and started pushing at 4pm and an hour later baby was here, no complications or issues

  • I was not induced as my PUPPPs cleared up before delivery, but I would totally do it if I were as far along as you. I was only 30 weeks when mine showed up with DD. Steroids helped a little, but no flames from me if you're thinking of inducing. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Alternatively, she could be pregnant until 41 or 42 weeks, spend weeks more in misery, and still end up needing an induction anyway. I had PUPPP in my first pregnancy and it only got worse the longer I stayed pregnant. There are very few options for relief. And Pit doesn't automatically mean you'll be stuck on your back. I was able to walk around, use the shower, bounce on the birth ball, etc., during my induction.
I get that, my SIL had the experience I shared and ended up being discharged because her induction failed (after 48 ish hours she was at 1cm) she was miserable for a few more days and ended up really regretting attempting induction when her body wasn't ready. I guess my point is *I* would try every available option before asking for an induction.

  • Just wanted to tell you "I feel ya." I have PUPPP and it is not fun. I will likely end up being induced for high blood pressure. I hope you find some relief either way.

  • My induction was long and boring, but it wasn't awful.  I just was really uncomfortable from the delivery bed, baby monitoring and constant blood pressure checks (preeclampsia) that made me unable to sleep.

It took 2 doses of Cytotec, a Foley balloon catheter to dilate my cervix more, Pitocin and water breaking and 36 hours of labor for baby G to come out.  Contractions weren't super awful until about 8 hours prior to delivery, and at that point I even had an epi, which either wore off or just sucked for me.  I had it redosed twice, and almost a third time, but at that point I was 10 cm and ready to go.

  • I had to be induced due to GD with my first (and will with this one if she doesn't come on her own before induction is scheduled). It really wasn't that bad. I think you should discuss it with your doctor. Have you had a cervical check? It does depend on your body and how ready it is, but not all induction stories end badly. Mine went well with DS.

  • I've been dealing with PUPPPs the past 2 weeks. I totally feel your misery. I've found the most helpful thing (didn't see it specifically mentioned in your post) is a lotion called Sarna. I just got it at the pharmacy, no rx needed and it works better than the rx hydrocortisone cream the dr gave me. Maybe it can help you too

  • I've been dealing with puppps too. I use Grandpas pine tar soap and it really helps relieve the itching. It never goes away completely but it helps a ton! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, I feel your pain! @hereid326‌

As PP mentioned, I think it depends on your cervix.  I was 4cm when I went in so even though the contractions were a B once my water broke, I had an epi, pushed for 40 min and he was out!  I got started on the pit around 6 and had DS at 4:41 that afternoon.
  • My induction was 15 hours from insertion, 11 hours from when I felt a bit crampy. They didn't give me pit until I stalled after getting the epi. I was also very unfavorable. I think I'd opt for an induction if I were in your shoes!
  • I have been induced with both my kiddos and both went pretty quickly with this LO she actually came too fast and I got no epi eek but my recovery was so much easier this time I started about 8am and had her at 11:16am. I was able to get out of bed the entire time since I did not get an epi best of luck to you hope you get some relief
