How much should I be feeding my LO?

Hey everyone! FTM here! My DS was born at 32 weeks. Almost 9'months, so 7 mo adjusted. He's on baby food that I blend up in the processor for him. He takes oatmeal or oatmeal mixed with fruit for breakfast then a bottle 45 min-hour later. He eats 2 veggies and a fruit for lunch and dinner with bottle in between feedings and another bottle before bed. His bottles are usually 7 oz or so. But sometimes when he's eaten all of his food and I walk away with the bowl he screams for more and he's still eating every 4 hours. My mom is constantly on me that I need to give him more food for his meals. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do?? Thanks!

I also made DD's purées, and she would eat oatmeal for breakfast, a fruit and/or yogurt for lunch, and a veggie for dinner. I froze her food in an ice cube like container, so the portion was a bit bigger than an ice cube. At one point she started eating 2 cubes for dinner, but around when she started wanting more I started giving her table food cut in little pieces. Try eggs, yogurt, avocado, or other high fat foods and maybe those will fill him up more. As long as he's still taking breastmilk/formula I think it's okay to increase his solids intake if he's still hungry.

  • I agree.  If he wants to eat, keep feeding him.  Just make sure you keep providing formula or bm throughout the day--I would do one more bottle unless you have been advised otherwise.  We also did mostly self feeding with finger foods, so once this starts, it will be even easier for him to regulate himself and eat what he needs.

  • Try some finger foods w him if you haven't already. We did BLW-style w the twins and it was a huge success. So much so that by 9-10mo, I had virtually stopped making purees and spoon feeding them. As pp said, he can self-regulate and explore w food a bit more if he's controlling quantity.
