DD says mama (but only if she's crying), Dee (for Daddy but rarely says it), Hey, Go, Apple, Bopple (bottle), Duck (dog but it obviously means something else to her because she says it when the dog isn't around), kitty, moo (which to her means any animal), and boop (which she got from DH because he will say 'beep' and touch her nose, etc. DD now says 'boop' and touches body parts with her finger, lol.). She also babbles a lot and waves her hands around like she's having a serious conversation, but I can't understand any of it. She looks like a little preacher.  Lol

I'm trying not to worry about her not having that many words yet. Our pediatrician said she is on track, and all the checklists I look at say 5 to 10 words by 18 months. I work with child psychiatrists, and they all tell me she's on track, too. DD understands a lot more than she can say at this point.

  • i haven't actually counted, but she is now starting to repeat what we say, but those aren't words she'll use normally, so not sure if that counts really
like colors, she wouldn't just say "yeyow" unless we said "say yellow"

is it bad that i don't how how many words she can say and what she can say?
she says mommy, daddy, ba, uppie, no, yeah, uh oh, milk and pasta on the regular, but other words she'll say randomly

DD tries to repeat a lot of what we say. She does a good job sometimes. She babbles constantly.

Her main words are mom, daddy, hi, bye, uh oh, up, down, bath time (sounds like da die), tickle, thanks, that, baby (every once in a while), fish (only at my mom's house looking at her fish), doing, going, and she whispers bless you after she sneezes (and started to after we sneeze or cough).

Eta also says woah and some

  • DS's vocabulary really exploded in the past month - ever since he's been at a new daycare where he is with 18m-24m olds. He is so communicative now and at least attempts most words and is really good a mimicking. I think 18 months tends to be the time when the vocabulary starts expanding.

  • DD is constantly babbling. As of right now she says mama, dada, uppie for up, dog, car, uh oh, tane too (thank you), eye, mouth, ball, more and I'm sure I'm forgetting something. It's getting so much easier now that she is communicating with words.

  • Jacey has a ton of words she has really been trying to jave a conversation with us lately. The other day she said hey pretty bird. She is very vocal, my nephew who is 20 months only has 2 words though.

  • DS is also entering his word explosion phase. He'll be 18 months next week. Off the top of my head:

    Mama
    Dada
    Kelsey (his aunt)
    Doggie
    Ice cream
    Bye bye
    Bird
    Car
    Truck
    Flag
    Ball
    Book
    Poo poo

I think there are a few more, but I can't think of them. I mostly typed them out for my benefit. :)

  • Literally, over seventy or eighty (I tried to write them down and have lost count at 70).

I feel like an ass saying it even though obviously kids develop at vastly different rates so it means nothing.  Some of them are extremely clear and some are mushier but they are distinct words.

It actually sucks sometimes because I think that it half of why she is a shitty sleeper because I will hear her practicing words for freaking hours to herself in her room at night.  However being able to communicate with her is so awesome and I am seriously amazed about it.  Yesterday's words were mouse and raining. :)

  • Something to keep in mind is that we have a pretty big developmental range. I hope no one gets worried.  There's generally a big word explosion around 18 months and some of the LOs are really close to that, and some of us at the end of the month aren't.

That said, DS is very verbal.  So was his sister.  My only "secret" is that we talk to them a lot, and don't use baby language.   If we think they are trying to say something, then we say "Yes that's a ___"  And I narrate everything I'm doing.
Good point! I need to keep reminding myself that DD was born later in the month and that her actual due date was Feb. 11. It's so hard not to compare and worry that your child is falling behind. I'm too much of a worry wart!

  • We recently had a talking boom! She seems to pick up a new word everyday. I was a little worried about speech development for a while but not anymore. So fun to watch them learn! We just introduced the potty so "pee" seems to be her word of choice recently, haha.

  • M says tons of words, but not much together.  And man, is she hard to understand.  I asked her just now if her mouth hurt, and she said, "yeah, my mouth hurts," but I wouldn't have known if I had not just said those words.  She may well be saying sentences frequently, but I can't understand it if she is.

This is my DD exactly. Every night, DH and I joke that she's in her room telling all her bedtime friends about her day. She just goes on and on and on for at least an hour. And most of it is pretty clear words and phrases.

DS#2 only has 4 words.  Uh oh, Daddy, Duck, and GG (my mom).  DS#1 didn't really start talking at all until closer to 2 y/o, so I'm just not going to worry about it.  I know DS#2 understands most of what we are saying, and he loves to make new nonsense sounds, so he'll get there when he's ready.  We are also at the very end of the month, so one of the younger kiddos on the board.

  • I voted 1-3 because he only says 'up', 'mama', and 'dada'. But he KNOWS a lot more. He seems to be picking up more and more every day. He can point out all the household pets, his body parts, specific people, his food and toys, and many many objects in his books.
  • DD has started repeating a lot of words. Her and her bestie both have a ton of words. She's started linking words like saying bye or hi to a specific person [hi yaya, hi Ada, bye daddy] and she knows mommy's/daddy's phone/shoes and mommy pee.
  • Ds knows way more words than he actually ever says. He follows directions and always knows what we seem to be talking about but the only words he says are: mama, dada, doggy, cookie, quack, duck, yes, no and car. Every once in a while I swear he says full sentences but maybe I'm crazy.

  • At last count she had 25 words and 6 signs but I think she has added some words since then.

Dd has more words than I can count. She can make 3 word sentences and constantly amazes me with what she comes out with.
Ds on the other hand, didn't talk until closer to 2.5 and was busy jumping, climbing and working on his drawing. None of which dd is too good at right now.

  • DS has added a lot just in the past week or two. Before that, he only said "dad", "momma", and "doggie". Now he has added "yes", "snack", "duck", "tanks (thanks)", "pool", "poop", "dipe (diaper)", "blue", "Josh (our babysitter's son)", "eep (sleep)", "byeeeee", and "love". If you say "one", he'll say "two".

I think it's interesting to see how kids develop so differently and excel in their own areas! I remember a few months ago being a little discouraged because my friends son was saying so many words, and my daughter was not. Even though he is four months older. But she has since gone through a couple of language explosions, and is now saying up to five word sentences. I can't believe how quickly it develops and it's so incredible to see it all unfold.

In not sure exactly how many words she says, but for a couple of weeks it was about one new word per day and then BAM. Tons of sentences. Her word of the week is "tired" and she keeps saying things like "Mama, I am so tired." "Daddy is tired." "Birds are so tired." Haha.

But she's still not sleeping through the night. Sighs.

I remember our dr saying it is more important at this point that they are understanding more words that you are saying than they are actually saying. Also, words that only you can understand also count.

They all develop differently and I wouldn't worry until 2 and isn't saying any words still. DD only says around 10.. maybe a little more because she has started saying more just in the past week or so and I haven't really counted. DS had more than 50 at 18 months and I have had to keep in mind that all kids are different and develop at different ages. And it doesn't take long to go from 10 words to 40.

  • My son is on the older end of the board (due 1/2 and born 12/26) and he only says Dada and usually just randomly not in context. We actually had him evaluated through ECI and he is behind and qualified for speech therapy. Although I'm sad he is behind I'm glad we caught it and can get him help so he won't fall too far behind. The good thing is he seems to understand us and will point out body parts when asked, get his shoes, etc. My word of advice is don't worry too much but if you are concerned look into getting an evaluation - the worst they can say is they aren't behind and don't qualify.
