Short version: Bay William arrived on Sunday 6.8.14 clocking in at 6 lb 12 ounces and 20". We are so smitten!
Long version: I started having contractions in the middle of the night and just knew "this was it" since they felt different than the good old BH. I sat on my yoga ball after i couldn't stay in bed anymore and watched a movie trying to stay calm. At one point I got up to go the bathroom and felt a lot of liquid come out. I thought it could be my water breaking but my contractions were still 11 minutes apart but jumped in the shower and woke up DH just in case. The doc's office told me to go in to the hospital to check it out. I got the confirmation that it did break and I was being admitted!
Then the nurse told us to get some lunch downstairs, take a walk and hang out. Say what?! I didn't know what to except but it wasn't that. We lasted all of 5 minutes in the cafe before I told DH I couldn't be there anymore. I've never seen someone down a grill cheese faster. We got back to my triage room and I labored for what felt like FOR-EV-ER. Contractions are no joke! I wanted to make it to 5 cm before the epidural but they didn't want to check me for infection reasons so left it up to me to tell them when i needed it. DH was a champ putting cold presses on my neck and forehead and then snatching them away instantly when I couldn't stand to be touched. It went back and forth from "that feels good" to "get it off me NOW" (in my best "there is no Dana only Zhoul" voice). I finally had enough and growled at DH that I wanted the drugs. He ran out and the nurse came in and took one look at me and agreed. Then she walked down a maze of hallways to the L&D room while I stopped along the way to grab the railing for contractions. That was the longest walk of my life! I finally got the sweet relief of the epidural and the doc said I had made it to 7 cm! For you natural childbirth women, you are all my heroines!
At one point I could feel back labor again horribly and it turned out my epi had come out! They fixed me up again but it was so close to pushing that I lost more feeling than I wanted to. I started pushing and when they offered me the mirror, I decided to go for it so I could see what my efforts were doing. Guys, they rolled out this portrait-sized mirror on wheels - like an old school classroom chalkboard! It made me laugh and was a little intimidating but honestly as a FTM, it really helped me connect with what I was doing. After an hour of pushing, my little Bay William was born. And he makes it all so, so worth it. Thanks for reading all of this!
