What to expect after Mirena removal?

Hello there! I am gettin my Mirena removed next week and I am kind of nervous and don't really know what to expect. It wasn't painful or anything when it was put in and I assume that everyone has a different experience. Just trying to gather some general what to expect information. Thanks!

  • I had mine removed on April 7, some cramping that day and the day after, but nothing major. AF came about 14 days later though it was lighter than periods I had pre-mirena. I had terrible cramps for a few days with insertion. I have not been pregnant and I know that can make a difference sometimes.

My GYN said technically I was fertile immediately...but I seriously doubt I O'd that initial cycle. I bought Taking Charge of Your Fertility and dl'd an app to chart. I use Kindara but this board uses mostly Fertility Friend. Use what you're comfortable with.

AF was heavier in my second cycle, but not anything beyond what pre-mirena was like.

    I hope this helps, GL.

  • I didn't have any pain upon removal. It was super fast and I felt fine afterwards. My doc told me I was fertile immediately and like beechbaby I didn't believe it either - then within the month I tested positive for my BFP for my DD! The mirena messed with my cycle so much I didn't know what was going on with my cycle. By the time I found out and made it to the doctor I was already 8 weeks! The doc said use backup BC immediately. When the doc says use backup immediatly - listen...unless you are prepared for a possible baby right then.

  • I had mine removed on Tuesday. I started spotting yesterday and today enough to wear a pad. I had no pain on removing the merina.
  • mine broke. I had to have it surgically removed. Part of it imbedded into my cervix. it hurt like hell. I had bleeding starting day one.

  • Removal was very quick and less than a second of discomfort. My OB told me to expect several days of bleeding like a heavy period but my withdrawal bleeding was a light flow. I temped the first cycle and confirmed O. My first real period was quite heavy.

My advice would be to have supplies to deal with any type of flow. If you aren't planning to TTC right away (or your OB recommends waiting 1 or more cycles) use another BC method. If you haven't considered temping yet that'll help you know if/when you ovulate and give you an idea of when to expect your next period. Even if you had predictable periods with Mirena (I didn't), cycles can be a bit wonky post-removal.
  • I bled for the next 5 days after getting mine out in April.  Then, with my "first" period in May, I bled so much that I was going through a super tampon every hour.  It was horrible.  Mirena is really not all that the Doctors make it seem to be.

A day or so of my first real post-Mirena period was super heavy, too. Stock up on all the absorbencies of period supplies, for sure.
  • I had mine removed on Tuesday. I started bleeding on Wednesday evening. Now im getting very heavy woke up in a mess this morning. No cramping or anything so far though.
  • I had mine for a full 5 years. Had it removed back in April, spotted for a couple of days after, just enough for a pantyliner. Then I got my first period about 3-4 weeks later, and they've been coming like clockwork since then. Removal for me sucked, but so did insertion. I'm a wuss though. ;) I think mine hurt more because I was anxious and expecting it to hurt. I felt woozy afterwards, again, probably from my own mind.
  • I had mine removed in March and put a nuva ring in the same day. I had zero bleeding or cramps and immediately got onto a normal cycle. I have now stopped using the nuva ring and am hoping for a BFP soon :)
