OT newborn T-shirts

Did anyone use and like t shirts on your newborns instead of onesies? We have some newborn onesies that I love the prints, but they really got used for such a short time, even shorter than any of the NB sleepers we got. I'm debating turning them into tees instead, but I don't know how well tees would work logistically on a newborn, so I'd like some input from those who have btdt.

  • I have a coverstitch machine, so basically just cut and hem. But it would work doing that too. If you use a twin needle, you can mimic the look of a coverstitch hem on the front and it has a bit of stretch too.

A was a November baby like this LO will likely be, but we still had her in short sleeves all the time because we tend to keep our house ungodly hot and because she was either constantly being worn, or was laying on us with a light blanket.

I'm more worried about if it would be irritating to a cord stump or something, or constantly be riding up.

  • In a wrap it's going to ride up. This happens in my Ergo with my son now.

And in the car seat they ride up and I'm always afraid of them allowing the belts to rub.

  • With all my babies I put them in those Gerber side snap t-shirts until their cords fell off.  They did ride up a little but they were always under something like a gown or sleeper so it was NBD.
  • I didn't like onesies with DS b/c I felt like they bugged his cord stump and b/c they wicked if they weren't on just-so. I found some of the Gerber side-snap t's, but I wasn't crazy about them b/c of having to snap them on one side, then on the other. It seemed like a lot of work to get them on for what they were. We have a zillion onesies, so I've been thinking about making a few into shirts like you said. I just plan to try to keep a little length on them so maybe they won't ride up too much.

I really didn't see the point of onesies during the NB stage. I left them unsnapped a lot. Sometimes we weren't sure if he pooped or just had gas, so it was easier to check if the onesie was unsnapped.

Plus, onesies cover up cute diapers. Boo.

I liked them later on when DS figured out how to undo Aplix. Then a onesie served as insurance.
  • I also didn't really use my newborn onsies.  My two kids have always had big heads, even though they were in the smaller weight range.

I usually just skipped to the 0-3 month size.  They were a little big, but it also avoided diaper wicking.

  • @charmingthemoon‌ you can use the snap part to make some onesie extenders too. :)

  • What model do you have?

Tip: Play around with your tension settings. A wavy edge means your tension or differential feed is off.

  • The brother 1034d doesn't function as a coverstitch.

  • Hey, ITK, I've got a question. I've got a regular sewing machine and the 1034D serger. Which one should I use to get a stretchy hem for the bottom of a shirt? And what will the stitch be called, if anything? I've tried looking through the serger manual, but I guess I need the "for dummies" version. (Is there a good, easy manual for this thing??)

  • Doesn't the bottom roll when you cut them tho? I like those side snapping tees, and had planned to use those, but anytime anything touched Js belly he would get a rash. So onesies it was.
Wait...how did the onesies not touch his belly?? Or was it the shirt hem that was causing the rash?

  • I think she means non clothing things when the shirt rode up.
