Stay at Home Moms

What do you think...?

I was chatting with some moms at DS's school field day, and we talked about getting some of the kids together over summer vacation. I said, "maybe we'll host a family gathering in our park." And they thought that would be great...someone said maybe a potluck...yadda yadda. Then one mom said she'd be happy to host a BYOP (bring your own picnic) and we were all a little confused. She said in her family they take turns hosting them...one person pays the rental fee for a location and provides entertainment, and everyone just brings a picnic lunch/dinner. That way everyone packs what their kids like to/can eat and they don't have to worry about pickiness and allergies.

Do other people do this/have you been to one of these events? I'd never heard of it before.

Re: What do you think...?

  • I have never heard of anything called that.  But whenever we get together with people at parks or different places, that is what happens.  We all meet up and bring whatever we need for the day.  It's a BYOLunch and/or snacks and we all eat together.
  • Maybe it's just a tradition in their family?
I've heard of people hosting a bring your own BBQ item, and everyone just brings what they want to through onto the grill for themselves. The host usually provides drinks/ sides.
Paying a rental fee and providing entertainment sounds kind of "fancy" to me. I don't think it would really take off around here, at least as a rotating thing. But, to each they're own.

  • Never heard of it, but I don't find it tacky or anything.. and think it's a neat concept.  People get what they want, pay for their own stuff, etc.

  • Paying a rental fee and providing entertainments sounds a little over the top.  I have never seen a name given to it, but when friends say "Let's have a picnic in the park" it is kind of assumed you just bring your own picnic. Everybody also grabs whatever outdoor toys they have on hand (bubbles, stomp rockets, balls, etc). BYOP makes it all sound so formal.
