birthday present help?

Another mom and I have become close at a play group she takes her younger daughter to. She's invited DD to her older daughter's birthday party tomorrow, which is nice. She also emailed to say a present wasn't necessary, but I'd still like to bring something... even if it's just something small. The trouble is I don't know if the little girl is turning 5 or 6... and I know nothing about her (her interests, hobbies, etc). So, what would you buy as a gift in the same situation? Heeelp meee.

Legos - since they've got the "girl's line"...  Also as the PP mentioned something summer fun is also a good "generic" idea.  Craft kits are another good "generic" idea at this age (think something a kid could pick up on their own and do, nothing that needs actual parental help...  Magnet/bird house/etc. painting for example)...
