High-Risk Pregnancy

Preterm labor

Well, I believe this baby is trying to come. We are 33 + 2 today. very nervous and scared. I took one pill of terbutaline last night and never want to take it again...the tremors and strangeness it caused are enough to send me over the edge. plus, i don't really like what I've read about the drug. Has anyone had magnesium sulfate administered? How did you feel on it? It can only help stall labor briefly is it worth it? Did anyone receive steroids this late? We haven't received any this pregnancy and they don't usually administer after 34 weeks. Is it worth it? Ugh stressed. By the way- baby's head was station 2 on Tues. I've had cramps/contractions for over a week that are strengthening and yday by fetal fibrofectin test came back positive. scared:( I have a doc apt. And non stress test again in a few hrs.

Re: Preterm labor

  • I know you are scared, but let me tell you that if baby was born now she/he would most likely do really well.  I had severe pre-e and delivered my daughter at 30w6d and she did great!  I had the steroid shots right at the end and I think they made a big difference.  She was intubated for less than 24 hours and in the NICU for only a day before moving to Special Care, but keep in mind she was born 3 weeks earlier than you currently are.  She is now 2 and you would never know she was a preemie!  I was given magnesium, however it was not to stop my labor it was to prevent seizures.  I can tell you that I hated it, but I think I am overly sensitive to most drugs!  Just try to stay calm and know that your doctors will do everything they can to get baby here safely!

Thanks princessbritt. My doc was out unexpectly today but they did another vaginal exam and I'm not dilated (thank god). But I just feel awful and so tight. Nights seem to be the worst and I'm not sure how to help that. I am also overly sensitive to drugs and I want to try to go natural because of it and also because I am such a restless person. Pregnancy is definitely hard but I keep thinking aboutt receiving the best gift ever...hopefully in a few more weeks.

  • Hi @amwenz! I agree that your baby will be fine if born today. I am no doctor but I went into preterm labor at 27 weeks and 32 weeks was a goal of mine. I effaced and baby was extremely low with contractions every 3 minutes for 8 hours. I really thought baby was coming. They stopped my labor with procardia. I received the steroid shots which really weren't a big deal. It was painful but quick with no side effects (for me). I was put on bed rest and I ended up being 2 days overdue!!!!  I understand how scary it is but keep positive and know that if your baby was born today he/she should be totally fine!
  • Lurker grad here.

I started with PTL and a shortened cervix at 23 weeks. I had magnesium twice and did two steroid shots. I was released from the hospital bed rest at 33 weeks bc my doctors felt the babies were safer at that gestational age. I ended up having a C section at 36 weeks after one baby's growth slowed down as they ran out of space. No NICU time at all and 9/10 and 10/10 apgars.

Magnesium was difficult - felt like my blood was boiling, but it stopped my contractions and got me a couple more weeks of gestation each time. I had no reaction to the steroids and we were worried about that one bc I'm allergic to oral steroids. Good luck!

Dd was born at 33w3d and at 2 years old, she is doing great! Other than being a tad on the small side, you wouldn't know she was early.

Had ds1 at 34w 1 week in nicu and is fine at 5 years old.  With ds2 went in for contractions at 32w had steriods and 3 shots of terbutilne.  Back in at 32w3d for magnesium - it was awful - ask for popsicles. Then had tributline again at 35w.  Was able to keep him cooking to 39 wks and it was definately worth all the side effects for me.

i have a 29wker (currently in the NICU). i went into hard/fast labor on 28+6, was given mag and steriods but the mag didn't stop the contractions. he wanted out!  he was born exactly 29wks.

personally, the mag didn't bother me much.  no side effects except slightly drowsy.  i think shock and really bad back labor dulled the reality of anything else, haha.

  • Are u having any lower back and abdominal pain ? What are u high risk for ? Sorry for the questions I just spent 6 days in the hospital due to what they thought was a leak since then I've been released but every Che makes me paranoid
  • I actually just had more experience with this myself!  Went into labor last week at 34w5d and since the OBs at the time wanted my perinatologist to weigh in on what to do they gave me Mag to stop labor.  I have had it before and hate it, but luckily it worked and the bad effects wore off pretty quickly.  As soon as my doctor came the next morning he took me off of everything and sent me home telling me that since I am 2cm and 0 station this little girl is going to come sooner rather than later and that is ok!  We are now 35w4d and just hoping to make it to 36w so she is not forced into Special Care automatically.  Every day counts!
