CPW: OB Dress Code

So I wanted to create this because at my last OB appt at 8 weeks they told me to completely remove all my clothes and wear my gown open side in the front. I figured I was going to get a breast exam or something. Nope! Just a pap and a vag ultrasound. So I'm sitting there talking to the doc trying to not flash her with my boobs during our entire chit chat for no reason! Is this normal? At my other appts I've only gone with the pants off dance off edition. So, on your OB visits:

"It's, not, where you are, it's where you're going,
And it's, not, about the things you've done, it's what you're doing, now"

  • Huh.  Interesting!  I've only been asked to strip down when a breast exam and/or 'head-to-toe' exam was being performed but always with the open part to the back, not the front.  If I was in your shoes and they ask the same to be done at the next appointment I would try it with having the opening to the back and just say you feel more comfortable with that?   :-/

Yea it was completely bizarre. I thought I heard them wrong and my husband confirmed the nurse told us open in front. It was pretty hilarious. We laughed about it after.

  • The nurse probably thought there would be a breast exam?  Maybe?  Hopefully?  That's weird.

  • I always am asked to wear the gown open in the front when I get breast exams.  Otherwise I just get that paper sheet and strip from the waist down.  I actually like the gown better than the paper sheet because it covers me better.  I hate trying to cover up my bottom with the paper while talking to the dr.  Awkward.

  • Just for paps and cervical checks that will be coming up in a few weeks, but I'm pretty sure the gown has always been open in the back and they just pull it down for breast exams. I'm certain I'm always trying to keep my ass covered while I wait.
  • I've been wearing skirts to my OB for every visit bc then I often only have to take off undies (and then only if t/v u/s happens). Easy peasy.

But when it's the yearly with the booby check, it's the front open gown. @classicstar28‌ you are so right about the paper sheet and bare bum. Very awkward!

  • Bottoms off only but only if I'm getting a pap or something along with the prenatal checkup. Most prenatal checkups are fully clothed.

  • I almost voted that your OB has a crush on you just because it was the fun answer.   ;;)

I'm with a lot of the PP- gown open in the front for my yearly/my 8 week appt (it had been almost a year since my last visit so they did the whole thing then).  Otherwise I've been clothed or bottoms only.

    I'm going with this.

I've never been to an OB for a non-prenatal appointment, because my PCP has always done my paps and breast exams.  But the only prenatal appointment at which I've had to remove anything was the first one, at 8ish weeks, and they did do an internal exam and a breast exam, so the gown (open in front) made sense.  Ever since then, it's just shirt up/pants down a bit for fundal height measurements and doppler.  We haven't done any cervical checks yet.
