1st Trimester

anyone take/took sleeping meds (now or pre-pg)?

I on occasion have pretty bad insomnia.  I'll ask my doc, but has anyone delt with this after they are pg?  Is there anything you have been told was safe to take?  (I took ambien pre-pg.)  Thanks!

Re: anyone take/took sleeping meds (now or pre-pg)?

  • Check with your doctor about this one. However, I have heard that taking tylenol PM (it has an antihistamine in it) is safe - but again, check with your doctor.
  • I took half a unisom with a vitamin B6 tablet almost every night for a couple weeks - it's a pretty common anti-nausea prescription for pregnant women.  I wasn't taking it for sleeping but it certainly made me drowsy, even just the half pill.

  • I took sleeping medicine before pg, but haven't needed it recently. I don't know if it's safe during pg but you might ask your doctor about taking melatonin. It's in the vitamin section of the store, and it worked really well for me. Tylenol PM, unisom, nyquil, benedryl... none of them made me sleepy but the vitamin did. Funny, huh??
  • I have bad insomnia problems. Of course right now feeling so exhausted all the time haven't had much trouble sleeping, but I take Tylenol PM or just benadryl if I'm not achy to sleep, and plan to as I need it throughout the pregnancy. I understand that's a safe bet, but as always check with your md first.

  • my dr has also said that tylenol pm is ok on occasion
  • I take Simply Sleep (made by Tylenol) when I need it.  Benadryl is also fine.

  • I also took Ambien pre-pg. I havent needed to take much while being prego, but theres been a few nights. My dr. recommended Benadryl for sleep and to try to stay away from the tylenol PM-she said too much isnt good for my liver, but she didnt say NOT to take it, but to save my tylenols for my headaches. Good Luck-I know how awful not being able to sleep can be.
  • The "sleep medicine" in Tylenol Pm is just Benadryl anyway.  I took Benadryl fairly often while pg w/ DS for both allergies and sleeping.

  • My doc said Unisom was fine.

  • I was given ambien when I was preg with my DD.
  • I can have pretty bad insomnia, but I just suffer through it. I normally take Benadryl for my allergies and to help me sleep, but haven't since I got KU. Just too nervous, but I might lighten up and occasionally take some once I make it out of the 1st tri.
  • i was given ambien in the hospital from 30w on with my last pg - ask your doc -not sure if it's safe early on or not.
