Most of the long one do need to screw in the wall.
This. Holes in the wall are pretty easy to fix though.

We are installing our gates this weekend. We just moved in the fall and we have beautiful dark wooden banisters we would have to drill into which would break my heart. I found this on amazon that we are going to try -

We have the Dreambaby gates. They are tension mounted so no holes. In our house they have been tested by 6 one year olds banging and trying to get out and they have not moved. Our opening is 4 feet wide.
They also have extensions so can add to make it bigger. They say with the extensions it can fit an opening up to 15 feet.
@madicase we have a nice wooden staircase and if you just stain the holes they're barley noticeable I know this because we stained some holes from the previous tenants and I don't even see the holes now.
@eaglewife Thanks for the link! I think I'll try that way first and maybe I can return the mounting kit.
@asbromle After years of gates being on the stairs regardless of how they are mounted I would assume I would need to do a few touchups when I take them off - so I'm relieved to hear you can't see the marks!
we have it in a wide doorway like in the product picture, so we don't have it screwed into the wall, only very tightly pressure mounted. It's held up for two years so far with DS1, we put it up when he was about 9-10 months old. He did finally figure out how to open it when he was about 2.5.
