HBP Help!?

My SiL is 14 weeks pregnant and just found out she has high blood pressure.
Her OBGYN told her that they couldn't help her, and sent her off to her primary! She went in yesterday, they prescribed some meds and for her to take the next 2 days off of work. She will be going in today AND tomorrow for checkups.
Her primary seems to think that she is too early along in her pregnancy for it to be caused by the pregnancy...
Her BP has been slightly elevated during pregnancy and has recently been reading between 140-150/80-90.
In her words: "I have been feeling like crap these past few weeks like my heart is pounding out of my chest and bad headaches then I had a weird episode with my eye... every time I have gone to the doctors my blood pressure has been slightly high.. I randomly get very shakey and my palpitations have been getting worse... today it measured at 164/92"
As per my Google Fu, it sounds like she may have chronic hypertension. I'm scared that it may lead to preeclampsia...
Is anyone going through a similar experience? What kind of treatment should she expect? My research shows that it will probably only get worse the further along into her pregnancy she is. Can anyone vouch for anything different?
Thanks in advance!

Re: HBP Help!?

  • With both my pregnancies, my BP spiked into the high 130's/ low 140's around week 20. I was never put on medication, but I was sent for additional testing to rule out pre-e. Most likely, she'll be asked to monitor her BP at home and call her dr if it reaches a certain number. I wound up on total bed rest in the 3rd trimester with my first. Good luck to your sister.
