Baby Names

Ariel?

I have been stuck on this name for a few weeks now for a future DD

Thoughts on the name? Am I crazy for considering using the traditionally male spelling?

Re: Ariel?

  • I think the mermaid obliterated the gender distinctions for Ariel. In 2013, there were 10x more female Ariels than male Ariels, so I don't think many people would find it strange to meet a girl named Ariel. Just prepare yourself for the mermaid references.
  • I like it!

  • I don't know if I am alone in this, but I say Ariel and Arielle a little differently.

Ariel- Air-el- el (almost like the word Aerial?)

    Arielle- Are-ee-el

Ditto.  The male name Ariel is still quite popular within the Hispanic community but that is about it.  I personally think the mermaid references and the fact that little girl Ariels get lots of "Little Mermaid" clothes, toys, and room decor is adorable!  By the way, as a girl's name…LOVE!!!!  Ariel Jane is a beautiful choice for a first & middle name combination.
  • I would try to correct mess that Disney made with poor Ariel and use the feminine version Arielle for a daughter.

But this is coming from someone with a son with a unisex sounding name with distinctly different spellings for the male/female versions so I'm biased.

  • I teach in a Jewish school.  In my school and in the Jewish community in general, Ariel = 95% boy.

As someone else said, ever since Disney's Little Mermaid, for the non-Jewish world, Ariel = 95% girl or fish.

I agree - Arielle is the correct female spelling.  Ariel is a typical Jewish boys' name.  The Ariel boys I've known have usually gone by Ari as a nickname.

  • Use Arielle please. I love it.

When I see Ariel I think boy name and Ariel Castro.
