  • I'm not sure how to spell it but do you remember the TV show Dawson's Creek? There was a character on there named Pacey or Pasey or Pace. Rhymes with Casey. Anyway, that could work.

  • I wouldn't do Ace as the first name. I like Ace as a nn for Asa.

  • I know you're talking about boy names, but I've heard of Ace as a nickname for Alice. I really like that.

  • Oh I forgot my other question was... Is Ace too much of an ego name to live up to? Like naming someone "número Uno" or "awesome sauce"?

As a given name Ace is bad. In all honesty I associate this name as someone who thinks they are really awesome but in reality is a big douchebag. Sorry. I think it would be best in the mn spot.

Yea, all this. As a cute at home NN, sure, whatever. But as a name he would introduce himself as? I put in the category with Maverick, just, no.

  • It's a bit too much, yes.

A nn this manufactured is hard to make stick, I think.

  • For the one Ace I know, his name is a nickname for a really long, formal family name (think something like Stanley William Jefferson III). They chose Ace as his nickname because both parents were huge tennis players. But Ace had zero real connection to his given name. It worked for him, and he is now in his late 30s and very successful and still goes by Ace.

I wouldn't use it as a given name because I agree it sounds very frat boy and obnoxious (like Maverick). I would probably pick an A name of some kind and use it as a nickname, or put it in the middle. It is a more logical nickname for Asa or Ignace. But I think you could probably do it for Andrew or Alexander...

  • You could also do a nn made out of initials. Something like Andrew Christopher Eric, etc.
  • My dad's nn for me as a kid was "Ace."  I don't remember how it started or what inspired this sort of unusual nn choice for a daughter, but it's been a part of my life since I was small.  However, this was just a nn within the family.  It wasn't like I wrote that name on my papers at school, or anything like that!  Now that I'm an adult, he doesn't use it as much, but he will still label birthday cards with my nn, etc.

I think it's an awesome nn when used casually in that way.  I also knew a child whose given name was Richard, but who was called Ace all the time as his name by parents, teachers, everyone.  It was cute when he was little and I was his babysitter.  They moved away when he was about 7.  He'd be in his 30s now.  I wonder if he still goes by Ace as an adult?

  • I think it is really dumb to try to manufacture a name for the NN Ace. It is way TTH.

Give him a name you like and you can use Ace as a pet name since he is your firstborn, if you must. If it sticks, fine. But people will side-eye this a lot. Last year one of DS1's LL coaches introduced himself as "Michael, but you can call me King." Really? He got serious side eye from me. I'd suspect future Ace would receive the same.

  • So our friends have an Auston.  Spelled like that.  I can't handle it and I won't call him Auston.  I call him Ace.
