I'm curious as well. There are Water Babies classes at YMCAs and health clubs and I was considering doing one of those. But we have 3 pools in our neighborhood, two with splash pools so I'd love to take him on my own.
use a pool shirt and swim diaper. If outside, make sure to have sun tan lotion and maybe even a hat on if it's sunny.
I've taken my LO (3months) in with me a few times and just held him as i walked around and he loves it. I'm just REALLY careful about splashing to make sure that he doesn't accidentaly swallow any pool water.

Also do not follow the advice of lotion. No lotion until 6 months.
Check with your pediatrician on the lotion. There are two types. One is primarily zinc oxide which is in most diaper creams and safe regardless of age according to my pediatrician (ie neutrogena). Others tend to be chemical based (ie water babies, copper tone, etc).
Re: pool time
I'm just trying to make sense of things :-)
