If you've stopped swaddling...

When did you stop? Why? How was the transition? Did you do one arm in and one out, or just go straight to both arms out?

LO sleeps sooooo much better swaddled. She's only 7 weeks now, so I don't need to stop yet, but I"m already wondering how that transition will go. We had her in the crib from the first week, so she's been sleeping the same way since then. Any advice or experience to share?

Re: If you've stopped swaddling...

  • I haven't swaddeled for a few weeks, all gone smoothly, stopped bc Levi didn't like his arms down by his sides, see picture /my avatar.. that's how he always sleeps and prefers it.

I'm an older mom and probably have some older mom ideas/habits but I don't get the swaddeling hype..

We haven't swaddled since about 3 wks. He hates both his legs and arms being swaddled.

I'm so glad you asked this. My DD is the same way. She flails her arms so much that she won't go to sleep without a swaddle. The couple times she has fallen asleep without a swaddle, she wakes herself up within an hour because she wiggles too much in her sleep! Interested to see how everyone responds.

  • We stopped after about 3 weeks. LO is really squirmy and likes her arms and legs free. She would get out of a good tight swaddle within 5 minutes so we gave up. Haha
  • Isla broke out of her swaddle last night and woke herself up at 2. She usually sleeps until 6. I am going to buy a bigger swaddle.

  • We stopped when she was about 2 weeks old. She didn't like her arms being in. We did swaddle with arms out for a bit and then just ended up putting her in a sleep sack. It's too warm now to put her in anything but Jammie's thought, but she doesn't mind.

  • We stopped at 3 weeks. She hated having her arms confined and would squirm and whine until she could get them out. Now she uses a sleep sack over her PJs and sleeps just fine.

  • My older two both needed swaddling until about 5 months old. When transitioning I made the swaddle looser day by day until
He didn't need it anymore. With my daughter I had her in a woombie and when she started to roll, I would do one arm out until she was completely out of it.
  • I didn't know there was supposed to be a transition. Mia just stopped letting us.

This. We stopped at 4 weeks because fussy little Houdini wasn't having it anymore.
Us too. Scarlett fought it until her arms were out and if she couldn't get them out she grunted and kicked so much it kept me up. She slept a little better swaddled I think, but she goes to sleep better wih her arms out. We are still using the Halo swaddle with her arms out.

  • DS was a few days old when we stopped. He fought the swaddle and would cry and grunt. So we tried just the sleep sack and he slept so much better.

My LO sleeps really great when swaddled but struggled against it and sleeps in the football position as well.

I found this and he loves it. I just ordered the next size up to keep using. He's 8 weeks.

  • Like @kelley72‌ , I'm an older mom.
None of my kids have been swaddled other than when the nurses did it at the hospital.
    I've always just used blankets.
Someone gave me sleep sacs when I had DS1, but he didn't seem very fond of them and I found them awkward for nighttime burping and diaper changes.

I'm old fashioned...keep the new-fangled stuff outta my house.
  • Harper hated between swaddled as soon as we got home from the hospital so we haven't swaddled since.

  • Allison startles herself awake if we don't swaddle, even for naps.  She fights it initially but calms down.  We also swaddle because no matter how often i attend to her nails, she scratches her face if not swaddled because her arms flail.

  • We're still swaddling Elias at 11.5 weeks old. He has crazy limbs, and we can only get him to sleep for about 30 mins without swaddle before he wakes himself up with his flailing arms. The Miracle Blanket is the only swaddle that he hasn't been able to bust out of!

We swaddled since day one, but have done arms out since about week one. My LO loves to sleep with at least one arm up by his head and screams if his arms are wrapped up. We put him in a long sleeve onsie and swaddle arms out. He's seven weeks.
  • we stopped using the swaddle sacks at about 2 weeks because lo would fight until he got an arm and a hand out then fall asleep. we've just been using sleep and plays or onesies w/socks and he loves it. I will probably try an arms-out swaddle sack in the near future and see if it helps with our transition from sleeping in the swing to the pnp's bassinet and eventually the crib. it seems like lo likes that squished and snug feeling but needs to be able to move his arms and legs to be comfy.

Still using the swaddle at 9 weeks . It works so well that I just prefer to focus on using it now rather than the future. I am sure my baby will let me know when it's time to give it up.

I have one of these. I think it wound be a good transition swaddle. It doesn't fit super snug, but keeps them from hitting themselves in the face

  • I guess I will follow her cues, but they're a little confusing! She sleeps well when swaddled, but pretty frequently ends up with one arm out by the time she wakes up. It's not bothering her to be swaddled at this point, though, so I'll just keep it up for now. She likes moving her arms, but wakes too easily if they're free to move while she's sleeping. Soon enough I'll try her with one arm out, and see how it goes. Thanks for all the insight... sounds like swaddling really varies from kid to kid!
  • Juuust kidding. She just woke up from a 2 hr nap screaming bloody murder. Gave her sine Tylenol. Still screaming. Stupid shots.
