Babies: 0 - 3 Months

night waking

what do you do when DC wakes up for a long time at night?  DH and I got into an argument last night over this.  DS went to sleep around 7:30 (he hadn't napped much at all), but was up at 830, 930 and 1030.  I was getting frustrated, so DH told me to go to bed and he would stay up and get him back to sleep.  Well...around 1115, I get up to go to the bathroom and DH is PLAYING with DS in the living room.  The TV's on and some bright lights.

To me, this is a bad idea.  It's letting DS think that it's okay to play at this time and not sleep.  DH says that we can't change a baby, so we just have to go with what he does.  Our son will be 6 months tomorrow - he should have his days and nights set pretty well.

When he wakes up and I get him, I try to rock him and get him back to sleep.  Sometimes it takes an hour until he's sleeping enough so that he doesn't wake up when I put him down.

I can't wait until I go back to the pedi on the 12th.  I have lots of questions!

Re: night waking

  • Good luck, I have this same trouble with my dh and ds. But it's getting better, I now bottle feed him at bed and put him down awake. It took a couple of nights of fussing and I loosley say CIO becuase it lasted all of 5 mintues.. but it got better and he's now a better sleeper, (most of the time) because of it.

  • I agree with you - he definitely should not get playtime in the middle of the night when he's supposed to be sleeping! I would tell DH that if he wants to mess with the routine, then he can have all the night feedings, not just the one night. Maybe if he sees that he's creating a nightmare for himself (not just you) he'll shape up :)
