Bacterial Vaginosis at almost 13 weeks

Hi ladies,

I'm 12 + 5 today, but baby measured 13 weeks today at the NT scan.  Went in for an "emergency" visit Wednesday due to a gush of thin clear fluid that freaked me out. Nothing fishy smelling, no thick discharge, no discoloration... but they did cultures and they came back + for BV.  My doc has me on Flagyl 500mg 2x a day now, and I just took the first dose. I've never had BV before, but apparently my friends who have said they had a very distinct smelling discharge, which I didn't experience. The gush of watery fluid was my only symptom. Im worried because of the increased risk of miscarriage and increased risk of pPROM.  Doctor said Flagyl is safe to use after the 12th week, but I'm just terrified imagining all that can go wrong.  Has anyone experienced BV during pregnancy, and would you share your experience with me?  I have been so on edge about every little abnormality and twinge during this pregnancy...

Thank you all in advance.

  • The symptoms of BV are usually increase in discharge and foul smelling odor. But the odor is not always there. When testing for BV, we put a chemical on the discharge that will bring out the fishy odor if it is fact BV. BV is very common during pregnancy and the risk leaving it untreated surpasses that the Flagyl would have on you or the pregnancy.

Thank you @BankerBSN , I appreciate your response! My concern is also regarding how long it has gone untreated to this point, which obviously no one can tell. My doc did just call back and told me to avoid Google, because "google didnt go to med school," and he told me that the infection isn't surrounding the baby because the baby is protected ... but I also heard it can get into amniotic fluid, so I am just overall confused. General consensus from medical professionals (Doc and now you, thank you!) has been to just complete the course of abx and things will be fine.... I'm a worrier though, can't help it much...  Thanks again!

  • I had BV at 26 weeks my only symptom was a small amount of bleeding. Apparently it irritated my cervix. I did the course of meds and all is fine now (39w5d).

It was no big deal at all, I will tell you that you may have some strange discharge thanks to the meds. I did anyway, mine had some white chunks in it and a lot of the girls on my BMB that had BV experienced the same discharge- we came to the consensus that it was due to the excess meds coming out. I wouldn't be concerned with the treatment or antibiotics causing an issue, it was caught and treated early leaving the issue untreated would have been a bad decision.
  • I had BV with my last pregnancy and this one and took Flagyl as well. I've had no issues with either pregnancy and my doctor says its much more of a risk to let the BV stick around than it is to take the medication. I didn't have any strange discharge after taking the Flagyl either.
  • Thank you so much for the replies! Been down for the count with these antibiotics. They're ripping apart my stomach!!! I felt like I had the flu yesterday with a low grade 100 fever too. Nastiness. Feel a bit better today and have been taking them on a full stomach now... Ugh flagyl is like poison to me! :/ the doctor on call was like "you can stop it for a few days until you feel better and restart".... I won't be doing that, I've never heard of it being advisable to discontinue and restart after taking 4 doses.

  • @cruelsound been eating Greek yogurt 2-3 times a day. Hopefully that's good. my OB doesn't recommend the probiotic supplements while pregnant... He says they're not sure exactly what's in them?
