Car seat advice

Does anyone have the Maxi-Cosi® Mico™ Air Protect Infant Car Seat and if so do you like it? I'm 21 weeks pregnant, first pregnancy and finding the choices for many of these products overwhelming. Besides looking for safety of course, we also want a product made in the USA. Any advice??

Re: Car seat advice

  • I have no personal experience with the seat you've mentioned. A lot of stores will let you try installing in your car - just ask.

All car seats have to meet the same US safety standards. There are no ratings for safety that are published to the public. The ratings you're referring to are most likely user ratings on ease of use. That being said, not all seats are created equal, meaning not all infant seats will actually fit a small newborn (Baby Trend and Graco Snugride 22, for example. The lowest slots are most often too high for newborns and when rear facing the straps need to be at or below the shoulders).

Chicco Keyfit 30 are slimmest front to back. Graco Snugride 30 are lighter then Chicco. I'm getting a Snugride 30 because it will fit and we can get an extra base for a lot less then an extra Chicco base. I would DEFINITELY suggest getting one with front adjust.

Overall, the best seat is the one that fits your child, is installed correctly, and is being used correctly.

  • The Safety 1st OnBoard Air Series seats are made in the USA as well, unless they are the ones included in a travel system. It's the same company as Maxi Cosi. I have one, used it for 2 kids and love it. It is thinner than other seats so you can even put them side by side. The new Air+ has the same technology as the Prezi. I have (until next week) the Clic It Snap N Go and loved using it! The Clic it works with the Maxi Cosi as well. My stroller recs for the Safety 1st would be the Clic it (light huge basket, sunshade-at least on my old version, and amazing parent tray), UniLite Universal Umbrella Stroller, or a Quinny stroller (you will need the adaptor). The nice thing with those Safety 1st strollers is that the Clic It works with everything but Britax and the UniLite works with everything including Britax so they resell themselves. I never had to advertise to sell mine (an acquaintance asked me about it) & I'll be sad to see it go. Just a heads up if you want to skip to a higher end stroller (like Valco or Bumbleride) I'd look at the Maxi Cosi. If you want easier to use lock offs and a premie/newborn angle get the Safety 1st. The Safety 1st has a level indicator ball and the Maxi Cosi just has (or used to) just a sticker only. I looked at a ton of car seats/SnG combos. :/
