Baby Names

Everett or Thomas

Just curious on everyone's opinions on these two names. DH prefers Thomas and I prefer Everett. The middle name will be Ronald after my late grandfather. Our last name is Lee

I like the name Thomas on its own however I dislike the nickname Tom and Tommy. Plus I feel like there are so many Thomas's as it is.

I love Everett and do not mind that it is similar to Bennett.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Everett or Thomas

  • I like Everett better but I tend to steer clear of names that have obvious nicknames. It's just a personal preference of mine. I also think Everett sounds better with Ronald and you don't hear it as often, which I like too.

I like the name Thomas better.  My step brother is Thomas and has never gone by Tom or Tommy. But with your last name, you get "Tommy Lee" so I don't know, that's a tough one.

I prefer Thomas. I know a guy who has always gone by Thomas because he and his mom always correct(ed) people if they called him Tom or Tommy. How do you know people wouldn't try calling him "rett" if he was Everett? People will try to come up with nicknames to matter the name, you just have to politely correct them.

Much, much prefer Thomas.  It's a classic. In 2012 it was 63, and has been declining in popularity.  However, It'a been a top 75 name for the last 100 years-- to me that's the selling point on this name.

Everett, while not as widely used as Thomas is trendy and on the upswing.  It's jumped almost 400 places in 15 years, and I think it will continue to rise.  That's the makings of a name that will have the tendency to sound dated in the future, IMO.

So for me, classic timeless names will always win out over trendy names.  I don't like being able to guess the age of the person by the name.   Right now, a Thomas can be a 6 month old, a 5 year old, a 30 year old or a 60 year old and I would buy it.  If I met an Everett I would guess he was younger than 5.

  • In general, I prefer Thomas. But with your last and middle names i would choose Everett.

  • I like Everett just fine (though it certainly is on the upswing popularity-wise), but I would never pair it with Bennett.  Way too similar.

    Thomas!

  • I love them both! I give the edge to Everett
  • They are both good names and I actually think Bennett and Everett are ok together.  And I can't get past Tommy Lee.  Everett is more popular now but I actually went to elementary school with an Everett and he was a sweet boy.  In his 30s now.

  • I totally disagree with Helenah. Everett is not going to sound dated because it hit its peak if popularity in 1910. And it's not trendy now! It's a classic sophisticated name with a rich history.

I think the names that are going to sound dated 40 years from now are the trendy Jacksons, Brayden, Jayden, and Aidens.

I'm naming my baby Everett if it's a boy :)
  • Thomas.

    Hate Bennett and Everett together.
