I'm THAT mom

My son has been home from the NICU for two weeks. He was born 29w3d and just turned six months yesterday so we were there for a long time! I am used to talking to his doctors whenever I had a question or wanted them to check him for something. Now that we're home, I still have a million questions, but now when I call the pediatrician, they want him to come in! We've been there four times already!!! One was the initial visit, but still! The receptionists already know us! I understand that they want to get to know him so they want to see him in the office-he is a bit more complicated than their typical baby-but I don't want to keep paying $20 copays :((

Will I ever be comfortable NOT consulting a doctor about everything?? We have a visiting nurse and I asked her what kinds of things I should contact her about instead of calling the ped and she said she'd just refer me to the pediatrician anyway. Great! That's no help!

We're definitely not in the NICU anymore! Oh and full disclosure, I called the nurse practitioner from the NICU the night he came home to ask a question! lol it's amazing they let me keep him!

Re: I'm THAT mom

  • I call my home care nurse for a lot of my questions.  She makes extra visits to the house so I don't have to take both babies (twins) out to dr.  I agree with usm123-call late in day if you can wait and you don't feel it's an emergency or ask to speak with nurse only.  My dr rarely asks us to come in to check out issue.

Good luck and take it one day at a time! :)
