Baby Names

Unisex names, suggestions please.

As a long time lurker, I see that unisex names are not hugely popular on this board but I figured I would ask anyways.

I have 3 kids. My oldest son is Foster Aiden and we have 2 daughters named Joey Elizabeth and Ryan Emily.

Clearly you can see the type of girl names we like. Now I am asking for some suggestions because I am pregnant with a little girl. We have some names already that we are tossing around. We just need some help with middle names (and we are open to more first name suggestions!)

Out of your list, Elliot is the only one I can really stomach as a boy name on a girl...but really only because of Scrubs and "Elle" as a possible nickname.

I like Lou as a nn for Louise/Louisa.

I could maybe see Parker as a boy name on a girl.

I like mj's suggestion of Frances.  Frank, Frankie, and Francie are all great nn.

I admire your restraint @mjreilly2. I don't have your restraint. WTF is this name list? Most of these are not unisex names, they are almost all exclusively boy names. Your other DDs have mns that suggest you aren't entirely allergic to girl names, so for real, what gives? Cut this list. Cut it all. Throw it away. Burn it. Here are some suggestions that are either ACTUALLY unisex or else non-frilly girl names:

    Morgan
    Kiran
Hero (this is a girl name from Greek mythology)
    Juno
    Frances
    Bree
    Alexis
    Arden
    Andrea
    Dana
    Sage
    Devin
    Renee
This is basically what I wanted to say...but words are hard. And no way would I have that many suggestions.

  • I like Morgan for a girl...also knew a little girl named Chandler that somehow worked for her.

My DH has a cousin who has a daughter "Mo/Moe" -- it's short for something, but I can't recall what....just seems to work with your sibset.

There are a LOT of unisex names that are currently more popular for girls: DD's name Jocelyn.  Evelyn, Madison, Avery, Addison, Harper are all top 30 for girls, but are considered unisex.  Seems like you're really interested in a boy name that's not popular for girls.
I bet her name is Maureen.

The only (truly) unisex name that I like is Robin.

  • DD's name, Adair, is about the only unisex/masculine-leaning name I like for a girl.

I also don't mind Sloane, Blair and Morgan.

But the ones on your list are straight masculine sans Andy (as a nn for Andrea) or Lou (for Lousia, etc)

I don't think your list is unisex at all. The only name on your list I have seen on a girl IRL is Sawyer and I think it is very masculine. The Sawyer I know is after her grandmother's maiden name... but still, I don't love it.

  • I am in the minority on this, but I really like feminine names with "boy" NNs.  Maybe something like that would work for you?

On my personal list is Francesca NN Frankie (I liked it BEFORE Drew used it OKAY????)

But I think these work also:

    Jacqueline NN Jackie

    Michaela NN Mickey/ Mick

    Matilda NN Mattie

    Natalie NN Nat

    Chalotte NN Charlie

    Antonia NN Toni

If not, other unisex names I like are (but might not fit your style)

    River

    Harley

    Hayden

    Quinn

    Ainsley

Ashley (though this has heavily gone to the girls)

    Cary/ Carrie

  • Almost all the names you mentioned are masculine, not unisex.

    What about...
    Avery
    Emerson
    Sloane
    Robin
    Leslie
    Dylan
    Sydney
    Kyle
    Rowen
    Sasha
    Hayden
    Rory
    Quinn
    Devon

  • I actually like Drew with your other names. It's NMS, but for your family and your naming style I think it's a good fit. Congrats on another girl!
  • The definition of unisex is "suitable or acceptable for both sexes".  So I think there are a lot of names that people here will say are historically just a "boys name put on a girl" but trends are showing they are suitable names for both sexes.

    Example, Payton (plus combined spellings)
    2012 Girls - 8,594
    2012 Boys - 2,714

    Example, Avery (plus combined spellings)
    2012 Girls - 9,864
    202 Boys - 2,117

But a lot of your names do seem to weigh heavily on the "male" side which in my mind isn't really "unisex"

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Quinn and Emerson were on my list to begin with but dh vetoed Quinn and I eventually got rid of Emerson. It's a nice name but not one I could imagine using. I would really like some suggestions for middle names if you guys I have any. I am very keen on these style of names so there is no point in trying to sway me away from the more masculine first names that dh and I obviously like.

From your list, I would probably go with Drew.  You seem to like traditional girls MNs, so

    Drew Marie

    Drew Elise

    Drew Margaret

    Drew Catherine

    Drew Jacqueline

    Drew Isabel

    Drew Olivia

  • I'll play along with MNs even though I think all of the below are horrible names for girls when there are so many beautiful girl names.

    Sawyer Anastasia, Elena, Iris
    Spencer See above
    Elliot Anne, Eve, Ursula
    James Charlotte, Aria, Eleanor
Andy Corinne, Francine, Francesca, Helen, Maureen, Pauline
    Felix Annabelle, Elaine, Eleanor, Helene
Parker Elaine, Aura, Diane/Diana, Ivy, Joy, Josephine, Lauren, Therese
    Lou Charlotte
    Shane Eliza, Amanda, Erica
    Drew
    Ashton

  • Since both of your other daughters middle names start with E, what about Elise, Eleanor, Evelyn, or Eliana

  • Parker Jane?

    Elliot Rose?

    Lou Margaret

I like Taylor and Morgan as unisex names.  But please do not name a little girl Felix.  That is not even remotely unisex.
  • Rhilyn, rilan, rylan
  • I love the name Charlie for a girl.
  • I like masculine names for girls as well. Don't think you're the only one. I realize we are in the minority on this board. You've got some cute names. I would also consider Soren and Sutton for a girl. I typically don't comment here because the board mostly sways toward truly horrible old people names. I'm pretty sure there can be no agreement between us. Lol

I have a Ryann Olivia. From your list, I'm okay with Drew. I like the suggestion of Drew Elise.

    Our girl name list is:

    Shelby Iris
    Taylor Jade
    Skylar Autumn
    Morgan Sophia
    Shae Josephine

If it were completely my decision our girl name choice would be Arden Sophia.

I would definitely choose something that is established as or at least becoming a unisex and I think a feminine MN is a must.

Yeah, I'm raising my DD to be a future old lady, because I want and expect her to be old someday. I don't expect her to be a dude.

    This!

I actually like Lou, mostly because I think it is a legit French name for a girl.

Can stomach Drew, also like Sutton, Dylan, Sloane, Frances/Francesca.

The problem is that boy names get turned into girl names and never return, which is lame. I'm sure you would never have named your son Elizabeth or Grace. Why is that?

There are so many great girl names- I just can't see why you would pick a name like Felix. Ugh, girl Felix sounds kind of strippery, actually. Not a fan.

Although I personally prefer pretty feminine names for girls, since your style is masculine names for girls, I would say Drew and Spencer are the best on your list for you. I've always kinda liked Charlie on girls (as a nickname for Charlotte) but in your case you could just flat out do Charlie.
