Baby Names

Edward and Howard Sibling Set

My first son is Edward James, and we are leaning toward Howard Alan for this baby.  What I'm wondering is if you would personally consider these names too matchy-matchy for a sibling set?  DS1 goes by Eddie right now and we would call DS2 Howie while he's little, so we wouldn't routinely be using the "-ward" ending of both names at this point.  Would naming two sons "-ward" names make you think we're a bit strange?

    Yes too matchy.
  • To be honest I didn't even catch until I read the post...

Doesn't bother me at all especially if they go by nns.

I just love Howard! I use to babysit a little boy Howard nn Howie and it wears so well.

I will also suggest Hugh. I think it has a similar feel and pairs well with Edward.

  • Thanks for the responses, ladies!

We do have a few other names on our list, the top runners-up being Franklin and Walter (both with MN Alan.)  But we're really feeling like this LO is "Howie" and I need to decide if the matchy-ness will bother me forever or if I'll forget about it!  DH could absolutely care less, so he's no help:)

To those who suggested Harold, I do actually like that name!  But I don't think I could chance my LO having the NN Harry:/

Walter Alan is a GREAT name.  I'm slightly biased though...

  • Too matchy for me.

  • The endings are the same, but I don't find it so matchy that I would side-eye them.  I mean, if you yell them on the playground together, it's not like they sound alike, and using Howie as a nn would fix that issue anyway.

If we were talking about Edward and Edwin, I would feel differently. I don't know.

It also could be because I don't ever see/hear of any little Howards.

  • I wouldn't side eye it but I am biased. I hope we have one more boy so I can use Howard in honor of my awesome dad. Would you consider nns Eddie and Ward? Or is that weird? I'm probably biased against Howie because my dad refused it as a nn.

I think you havea very solid list!
  • I think they sound fine together. And I really like Howard...like Howard Hughes.
