conflicting information on mastitis

I am on an antibiotic right now for mastitis on my right breast.the nurse at my OBGYN office told me that I have to pump and dump in my right breast. I always thought that you could continue to nurse with mastitis, this is what I found on Kelly mom and leleche. I have a call in to my Dr for clarification but just curious if anyone has any experience with this. The idea of pumping and dumping kills me!

Re: conflicting information on mastitis

  • that is just bizarre. there is no need to pump and dump. you want to empty the breast as completely as possible, and baby is more efficient at that than the pump. you would be compounding the issue by pumping that side.
  • I thought it was weird too. At this point I'm going to follow my instincts and continue to nurse on both sides

  • No reason to pump and dump.  Unless perhaps you have an abscess.  Even then, questionable.  The infection is not in the milk ducts, but the surrounding tissue.

  • I've had mastitis twice. The first time I was still trying to nurse and I was getting a little blood in my milk when I pumped. The LC told me even then it was still ok, that unless there was a lot of blood there was no reason to dump it. No blood the second time, but I never dumped and baby didn't have any problems.

If you are getting a lot of blood they may want you to dump because it could possibly upset baby's stomach. But I don't know if this is much of a concern because I read conflicting information when I was going through it myself.

I'm sorry you have mastitis, it's no fun!
