Cost of in home daycare

Good friends of ours are expecting in October. They are interested in having me watch their baby at our house. I'm not going back to work and I would love to watch their LO. I would want it to cost less than daycare but still make some money. I would start watching the baby at 6 weeks when Mom has to go back to work. We haven't discussed details but I am wondering what would be reasonable to charge per day? Any suggestions in regards to in home daycare are appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Cost of in home daycare

  • I am taking LO to a (relatively inexpensive) licensed in-home provider and I will be paying $150 a week. She also has a $35/day option as well.

  • We're paying our in-home provider by the hour because my schedule varies such that we need her anywhere from like 9 hours to 20+ hours a week. We pay $10 an hour

I've lived many places across Canada.
I've always been able to find licensed in-home childcare for $30-35 per day. Even a lot of day care centres work out to be $35-40 per day, but the centres usually charge by the month, so it would average out differently. I've had friends and family do non-licensed care for their neighbours and friends. They charged anywhere between $20-40 per day.

I  think things you need to consider when setting a price are: - what resources will you purchase to do childcare? (Food, craft, toys)
    - normal hours (and if they need alternate times, will you charge?) **and extended hours...
    - outings? Will you go to the zoo? Anywhere else where you need to pay admission or other fees?
    - will this be short term? (A few months to one year?) or long term? (Ongoing?)
    - will they take advantage of a 'cheap rate' and use you at other times?

     Good luck! And have fun.

  • Woah.

I'm in south shore MA and our hourly average is 12-15/hour....and thats low average!

We asked our nanny what she'd be comfortable with for pay and we agreed on $100/day for an 8hr day. That works out to 12.50/hr.

I love the nanny we found - her parents live next door to mine and I used to babysit her daughter!

...I'm dreading the day. September can take its time.
  • I live in MA too and our in home daycare is $53/day.

I would charge less than an in-home since you aren't licensed and aren't following a daycare curriculum.  I would look on Craig's List to see what the norm price is for a SAHM providing care in her home.

It's hard for us to tell you because of regional differences.

I might also look at care.com. It'll give you an idea of average for your area, so you can set a fair price.

I agree there are differences due to geographic location, but I am just curious to see the going rates. While I won't be following a day care curriculum, I am a teacher (I guess I should say used to be a teacher) and certified in CPR. I've looked online some more and it varies from $30 to $80 a day. I will have to find out how many hours a day the baby would be at my house. Thanks for your input everyone!
  • These prices are crazy! Around here, rural Ohio, daycare averages around $3 an hour, so $24 a day.

We take DD to an in home daycare and pay $6 an hour. Age makes no difference to her.

We have someone come in one day a week to watch DS (there is no opening at DD daycare...YET! I'm believing!!) and we pay her $8 an hour.

This--and I'm in the Twin Cities metro in MN. Licensed home daycare.

That being said, we have used 2 other licensed home daycares for my SD in the past, and they were both $40 per day. So, it definitely varies...and there is no outward difference in the $25 one we are starting them in this summer vs. the $40 ones we have used previously.

  • A friend has an in home daycare here in Nebraska and she quoted me 2.50 an hour or 20 dollars a day. She's so good with babies but I'm still nervous about anyone watching baby girl. :-( the next 2 weeks can go slow!!
