Quick summary for those of you in a hurry: Calleigh Rose was born 4/23 at 5:48pm via unplanned c/s. She weighed in at 8lb1oz and was 21 inches long.
Book version: Easter Weekend, specifically late Sunday and Monday, I noticed a change in movement. I was still hitting kick counts, but it was with little nudges and toe wiggles, not movements I'd been feeling. She was doing great on doppler. I had a BPP scheduled in the morning on the 23rd, so I decided that unless it became apparent something big was going on that I'd wait until then to speak with my doctor (I didn't start to get concerned until Monday after close of business). On Tuesday I went in for my BPP. Baby girl actually passed it, but the tech noticed the same changes that I had. She was moving, but only reactively (when prodded). The tech also noted that though I had enough fluid to pass the test, that it was a notable change from a week prior (I was going in for weekly BPPs). She consulted with a doctor, and I was sent to L&D to deliver due to low fluid.
This was actually my second time being sent from a docs appt to deliver a baby, same thing happened with my son (his was due to pre-e, with her I was being monitored for GD and that's how they caught it). I had enough of a feeling about this one that I brought my hospital bag with me. There were a lot of other things I did as well...like not tell my son I'd see him after school (I said I'd see him later instead). Anywho, from being sent to L&D to the part where the c/s comes in is pretty much a cookie cutter of my sons birth story. I was 38w on the nose for Calleigh's induction. Started the process dilated to a 2, which I knew meant Pitocin (I was a 1.5 with my son and got the devil drug). When you are on pit, they have to constantly monitor the baby...which restricted my movements. Between not being able to move freely and the pit contractions, I got an epi again. They broke my water with this kid as well. I also discovered that my body apparently throws up as I get into transition/pushing (I puked with DS as well, but thought it might be from the magnesium) and that I shake uncontrollably at that stage as well (also happened with son, but I thought it was the fever I got with him).
Fast forward to the exciting part: When I was about a 9.5, they started noticing her heartrate would dip with each contraction. It generally was dipping down to 90-100 and then going back up when the contraction was over. Docs said since it was reactive they weren't concerned, that it was likely her head working it's way through the pelvis. I was concerned though, for sure. I was at a 10 pretty quick and they had me start pushing right away. Deal was that I push for an hour and then we see where we were for progress. It was already on the on-call OBs radar that there may be an issue developing. An hour later I hadn't progressed at all and her head was still relatively high (+3 station, I think?). I was getting some excrutiating break through pain in one spot with the epi and her hb was still dipping with each contraction. I flat out told them that I wanted a section. I felt like I was pushing for nothing (zero progress) and that there clearly was an issue if I wasn't progressing and her hr was still dipping. The on-call agreed and they prepped for the section.
Pretty freaking surreal to be wide awake on the table when the operate on you. They didn't rush things as it wasn't an emergency section (she and I were both stable), but they did plug right along. I felt them do the incision (not pain, just the pressure of him doing it), there was a push upward to get her out of my pelvis and then she was out and crying. I totally started crying when I heard her. The doc said that there was no way she was coming out vaginally. Her head was 14" around. Very thankful I listened to my gut and pushed for the section. Apgars were great at 9 & 9 and she came out really pink (DS was a blue-pink and that kinda scared me, so hearing she was pink was a huge relief).
She and I have done great with our blood sugar post delivery (I had GD so we were both checked). I did supplement formula with her in the hospital to keep her from having to get a bazillion more pricks for sugar checks. Hoping to do the same thing I did with my son (he also had low sugar). Been putting her to breast first during feedings and syringe feeding her there as much as possible. The times she didn't have the patience for that I've done some finger feeds and bottles. My milk is just coming in now (4 days pp), which is exactly what happened with DS. Expecting the joys of engorgement tomorrow. She is having issues latching long enough for me to let down (I have flat nips and it likely is a result of that and my having to use a shield), but we are working on it. Since my milk started coming in I've been taking pumped milk and syringing that in to get her to suck long enough to get me to let down. Twice today it's worked beautifully and she's nursed to sleep she was so happy on the boob. I'm optimistic that with practice she'll be able to EBF like her brother did.
Sorry for the novel, lol
Now for an attempt at a pic. BTW, her name and pic will disappear at some point for privacy reasons. Also, can someone tell me how the heck to change my tickers? (in the pic with me in it, that's the first time I saw/touched her. the warm towels were around me bc I was freezing)
