Trying to Get Pregnant

So I feel like a freak

I didn't really object to alot of what that extreme motherhood show portrayed.  I'm not held down by alot of the traditional western beliefs so I guess I just have a different perspective, but I wish people would be more open minded about the thought that maybe our "modern" culture isn't necessarily the best culture to subscribe to.

  • Well if you look at the post below about the show, almost everyone made comments that the ladies were gross and weird, I didn't see it that way.  I think having different perspectives is a good thing.  I don't think I'm being any more holier-than-thou than anyone else has been regarding their OPINION on the subject.

So you did not think the ladies who carried around fake babies made in an oven, and threw b-day parties for these fake babies were weird?

  • Im with you Moo in some aspects, Whilest I believe in traditional western beliefs I do also believe that those women werent TOO extreme.  Some things could have been done without but I do believe that to each their own and if that is how they were raised to mother their child then so be it.  Everyone has the right to their opinions and should not be judged for it.

Lyse, I would call that borderline mental defect to say the least however, to each their own.  they arent hurting anyone but themselves

  • I get what your saying moo but honestly unless the children are getting significant nutritional benefits from BFing at 8 I don't see the any reason for it. In the US our children are lucky enought to be able to obtan nutrition from other sources.  Just my op. I'm sure theres plenty I don't now about the subject.

I thought it was sad, they obviously had some emotional issues that needed to be resolved.  What is the harm of them carrying around a fake baby though really, atleast they weren't luring someone from craigslist to their home to cut the newborn out of them, if only all crazy people were so harmless.

  • I didn't watch the show, but how is BF an 8 year old healthy for that child? maybe you can change my mind but, as a teacher, I can't imagine what that would do to a child. especially an 8 year old!
  • The children chose to do it, they were not forced and they weaned themselves.  In less industrialized countries children often nurse much longer and are weaned or wean themselves when they are ready.  I don't think I'll be nursing till my child is 8 but that doesn't make what her and her child do perverse

  • I am curious to see what the research is on BFing children above a certain age. Especially once they have started school.

Right but they do it in less industrialized countires because its often the only way for children to get the nutriants they need. Not sure what the value/benefit would be for doing it in the US.

don't you think in less industrialized countries there is more need for this? the nutritional foods may not be available, etc. maybe there is more I need to learn on this subject I'm just struggling to see the benefits. when a child is old enough to know what is happening. I just think there are some psychological things that may happen.

  • In this country no one needs to breastfeed so using your rational why do it at all?  Our society has moved in this direction, people making commentary on women breastfeeding in public.  I guess my objection is to the idea that breastfeeding and natural weaning is weird.

  • I'm not against breastfeeding, nor am I against breastfeeding in public. I'm just trying to understand breastfeeding past around age 1. I guess I see the nutritional benefits early on and the bond it forms between mother and child when they're young. I'm just wondering about the benefits of doing it beyond that. I guess I need to do some research on it and educate myself.
  • I guess I don't understand the need for an arbitrary age that tells a woman she must take away her breast from a child who is still obviously getting something from it, whether it is nutritional or emotional there must be something or the child would not continue to do it.

  • I can see your point. I need to look at this issue more. I know I won't be BF past that age but I'm not against others doing it. I just struggle with the much older children. that's something I must work on.
  • I am not saying my opinion is the right one by any means,  These issues are highly personal and develop between you, your spouse and your child.  I think playing devil's advocate can be a good thing.

So, to play Devil's Advocate here...should you give in to all your child's emotional needs?
