Baby Names

Is this name too "old"?

We're solid on a girl name - Abigail. While popular, there is not a single Abigail in my sons entire school, and its just not often heard in my area.

Boy's names are where we need help!

My Grandfather was Virgil. We both LOVE the name and my husband is solid, but I feel its just too "old" for current day.

Thoughts?

I hate to say it, but I can see "Virgil the Virgin" chants in his future.

  • Virgil is NMS. What about Erwin, Leo, Julius, Hugh, Wilmer, Wallace, or Henry?

  • It's nms but I wouldn't side eye it. I don't think it's too old. Like pp I can see him getting teased along the lines of virgin Vergil. But kids can be mean about any name so I wouldn't let that stop you from using a name if you and you husband love it.
  • Middle name it

  • Virgin VIrgil went through my head too. I think I need to use my veto power.

If we don't go with Virgil, I cant middle it because the next name is Wyatt and Wyatt VIrgil.. eh. Both are Earp brothers and that's just creepy.
  • NMS but I don't think it's too old. If you aren't completely sold on it, I'd use it as a middle name.
  • I went to high school with a Virgil but he went by his middle name.

I would do the same or just mn it.

If you plan to use Virgil I would get rid of Wyatt as a fn.

  • I think Virgil is good for an adult.  He'll be an adult much longer than a child.  I knew one where I used to live he was a great guy.  Maybe that's coloring my opinions too much.
  • I vote keep Virgil as mn, ditch Wyatt.

I want to like it, but I just don't care for this one. I'd use it as the MN as well.

  • I see I'm in the minority here but i like it...probably because the only guy I ever knew with that name of was such a hottie. He was from Argentina so his full name was actually Virgilio but we called him Virgil

I'm not a fan of Virgil as a FN, really like for MN

  • I kind of like it but I have a Virginia so there's that.

  • If you love it - use it. Don't worry about whether people will think it's too "OLD". By the time he's an adult, names like "Ashley" will be old lady names and names like "Virgil" and "Opal" will be all over the place.

  • I'd middle name it.

  • To be completely honest, I would feel bad for the poor kid stuck with the name Virgil.

  • I am so completely in love with the name Virgil. Tell the Earp brothers that you feel sorry for their brother for being "saddled" with Virgil.
It rocks!! Absolutely 100%!! And, bonus points for the family tie!!

    Why is it creepy???

Virgil is NMS for me, but it's a perfectly fine name. How about Lionel?

  • I actually sort of like it, but I have a positive association.

  • I'm not a fan, but it is a solid name. If you love it, use it.
  • I actually really like it. Virgil is really cool!

If you're worried about it, then middle name it.

Wyatt is NMS at all. How about:

    Julius Virgil
    Andrew Virgil
    Jonathan Virgil
    Joseph Virgil
    Henry Virgil

  • Does it work with big brother's name? Virgil is very country to me, as is Wyatt, so even though they are nms personally, if that is your thing then I think it is fine. And if he doesn't love Virgil himself, is Gil an acceptable NN?

  • Too old now may not be too old in 5 years. I brought up names like Henry, Oliver, Evelyn, and Hazel a few years ago and everyone said they were too old sounding. Now most people wouldn't think twice about them. Go with what you like, not with what's relevant right now since it changes so quickly! You may be ahead of the Virgil phase, who knows! I do like the name by the way, for first or middle.

Me, too. I think it's pretty bad, whether for a kid or for an adult. Virgin jokes for sure and it just has a nerdy sound to me. And people always talk about teasing from kids on the playground but some adults can be pretty bad with teasing, too (especially the avuncular types who think they're funny).

I would definitely choose Wyatt over Virgil.  I love the name Wyatt.
  • I like it.  My SIL is also due in September (as am I) and their boy name is Aaron Virgil.
