FF'ers: ? on Similac for Fussiness

I've formula fed since day 1, Similac Advanced. We have been dealing with a very cranky baby the last week so I did some research and contacted pedi and he thought that yes, try the Similac for Fussiness & Gas to start based on what I told him. Has anyone tried this formula?

I have 2 questions. 1) have u noticed how bubbly it is? Seems worse than reg formula. 2) is the consistency suppose to be the same? He seems to be starving like he isn't getting the same amount/substance?

Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated!!

Re: FF'ers: ? on Similac for Fussiness

  • We used it up until last week when we found out LO had a dairy allergy . We too started with the advance she was fussy then we switched to the sensitive bc she was constipated as well . It seemed to work ok for a few weeks but it started making her super gassy and super constipated . That's when we found out she's allergic to dairy . She's now on nutrimegan . But yes it is super bubbly so we would stir it with a spoon instead if shake it . And now that you mention it she was more hungry and super fussy for her food . Now that she's off of it she will sleep 4-5 hours straight at night and during the day she will go longer as well . No advice really , I can just relate to those issues !

  • No that is great info @Futuremrstonyasmith‌...thank you so much for responding. It breaks my heart that I can't calm him down when he is having his gas pains and now I feel terrible like I'm starving him.

We had to switch to sensitive from advanced when DS was just a week old. It's super bubbly and not as thick as the advanced.

  • You can always add gas drops to the bottle that helps. Also try adding another ounce to the bottle. It's also possible you LO may need more to eat. Babies won't over eat so no need to worry about that.

  • My LO didn't do well on Similac. She's now eating Gerber Good Start Gentle. They also make a Soothe formula too. I've researched about it, and it had wonderful reviews and she is much happier.
  • Thank you all for the responses!

  • We switched to the sensitive formula and now we're using the target equivalent. If anything, LO seems to have less gas and is much much easier to burp during a feeding. It always seemed like she was pained when on the advance formula. I do notice it is more bubbly and try to give it more time to settle after mixing it.

    Exactly this!!
  • @Futuremrstonyasmith‌ just curious how they figured out how your LO has. dairy allergy? Mine has bad reflux and she has been on Similac Spit up however she's still super gassy with it where she is needing gas drops pretty much after every feeding. She's super fussy before meals too and she's still eating every 2 1/2 to 3 hours during the day with it. You think with the added rice starch she'd be fuller longer. I really don't see an improvement with the amount she's spitting up and she still seems to be in pain after feedings. Ugh! So frustrating! The pedi mentioned a hypoallergenic formula if all else fails and I think this is the route we may need to take.
  • @Raebabe1008‌ LO had a pedi appointment last week . We had her on the sensitive for a few weeks but she was super constipated , fussy and miserable , she was passing ALOT of gas but that was it . . I mean constipated to where she hadn't gone in a week . She also would scream after her feed and I could feel her tummy tense up and could tell she was miserable . So my pedi said it seemed like a diary allergy ( which I have myself ) so she gave me the nutrimegan formula to try . It's not a cow based formula , but a probiotic . So she has been on that for a week now and I can tell a world of difference in her . She's happy , smiley and cooing all the time ! And a poop machine . It was just trial and error to determine the allergy , just with the symptoms I described to her dr and how she's reacted the new formula that's what she said it sounded like to her . Especially with all the gas pains and constipation . Which her dr said she may grow out of in a few months . Right now their bellys are still super sensitive to a lot of things .

  • My LO had a problem with Similac Advance as well. Tons of gas, tense tummy, screaming from pain, screaming right before and throughout pooping. Changed to Enfamil Gentlease, but it didn't help as much as I liked. Also added Gerber Soothe Probiotic drops, and eventually has drops and gripe water as needed. At the end we decided to try Similac Sensitive (same as gas and fussiness?) and so far it's been 2 weeks and we have seen a huge improvement in her. We rarely need the other interventions, but once in a while use them. As for the bubbles, I caved and bought a Dr. Browns Formula Mixer and it made the bubbles as well as the "clumps" disappear. Maybe give that a try? Well worth the $12! Plus I make enough for the whole day and keep in fridge, so all I have to do is warm up her bottles.
