Pronunciation Question - Georgiana

It seems to be the day for pronunciation questions so I'll jump on board, too. DH really wants to use Georgiana and I love it, but I'm afraid people will pronounce it George-ee-anna, which (no offense to anyone who uses this pronunciation) is like nails on a chalk board to me. So, if you saw it, how would you pronounce it?

If you pick # 1 and are feeling generous, could you tell me where you live (i.e. State/region)?

Also, please forgive my probably wrong phonetics, I stink at them.

Re: Pronunciation Question - Georgiana

  • For me ana= ahna.

But you might have to correct pronunciation-- IMO that's NBD.

  • Helenahhandbasket - true story; people pronounce DD's name (Jacqueline) wrong all the time so I'm used to that. I was more wondering what the general feeling on ana vs. anna was (to me, ana is always ahna but I've heard a lot of ana's pronounced as anna where I'm living). Thanks :)

Wow special snowflaking it up in here---I instinctively say "Jor-jah-na" because....I don't know, I'm special? I just polled a few coworkers (we're in Boston) and all said "George-ee-ahna."

  • Until this board and behindthename.com, I would have said george-ee-ahna. However, I think the right way is jor-jay-na like previous posters mentioned.
  • Irishcurls - actually, I totally get that one. It's like saying "george-ee-ahna" really fast (I'm from the NE originally so I talk really fast). And since it still has the "ahna" sound at the end, that makes me happy :)

Honestly when I look at it, I think "George-Anna"
  • bromios - makes sense! Good to know there's another possibility. Luckily it doesn't bug me like George-anna. Thanks :)

  • Definitely 'George-ee-anna' for me. I'm in Eastern Ohio

  • We were going to use this if our baby was a girl. I have only heard it pronounced George-ee-ahna or jor-jay-nuh. We were going with the first pronunciation.

  • I voted George ee ahna.

I had this on my list and after watching the movie The Duchess, in which the character uses the Jor Jay nah pronunciation, I posted about it on the board. This was a couple years ago I think. Anyway, the majority of posters then would not have used the British pronunciation.

  • Definitely Ahna. My first name is a long name like this and ends in ANA.... And some people pronounce it like Anna..I don't get why.
  • I usually pronounce ana as "ah-nuh" but for some reason I've always though Georgiana was pronounced like "george+anna."

  • Anna. I'm from Montana and know someone who pronounces her name this way. Maybe that's why?

  • jor-gi-anna when I first saw it, although the other way sounds normal to me too. I'm from Wisconsin though, we do our vowels weird there.

I'm "near Boston" and I say it as just three syllables. George-ah-na. DH has a cousin in NY and that's how she says it as well.

    So I didn't vote.

I love the name, btw. I love it mostly how I say it, but all are nice to me.

  • I said #1 (although I would say it tentatively, knowing the latter option might be the correct one too). I'm in upstate NY.

  • What about just Georgia OP? It's more simple to say...but I am biased because that is DDs name lol

  • I'm near Boston and I say Geor-gee-anna, but that's because I've only known one woman with this name, and that's how she pronounced it.

  • Thanks to everyone who responded!

trackgirlparis - Georgia would definitely make it easier, but DH has vetoed it (he's very picky). It's a really cute name, though!
