Stupid Question - Crayons?

At what age did you start letting LO play with crayons?  I found the jumbo ones but DD just turned 1 on Apr 1st so I don't know if she's still too young.

Re: Stupid Question - Crayons?

  • They started letting DD play with crayons around 1, the jumbo ones. It is fun for them to see the cause and effect of the crayon and the jumbo ones are easy to hold.

Sorry I meant to say at daycare they started with her at a year.
  • I don't remember with DS (although he is 3 now and still not interested), but DD is 15 months and she'll play with them at restaurants a little but not interested enough for me to take them out at home.

  • M is very interested and has been since before she was 1...but she wants to bite them.  And then we have a big tantrum every time when I try to take them away.  She scribbles about 0.1% of the time and dots about 0.1% of the time, but she wants to carry them around and chew on them.  We have some for little kids and they come apart and color her mouth.  Plus, the little pieces stain things.  So I have to take them away if she does not want to color.  We try about once/week, but I do not have it in me to start a fight more often.

  • Around 15 months is when DS started coming home from daycare with artwork, so that is when I bought him crayons to color at home.

  • DD3 turned 1 at the end of March, and she likes to "color" with crayons. She does try to eat them sometimes, but for the most part she does well. She also likes sidewalk chalk. I never would have thought to give crayons to DD1 at this age though. It's funny how much older a 2nd or 3rd child can seem.

  • DS is mildly interested at almost 16 months. He'll make a few lines, then moves on. I think he'll like the jumbo ones better; I've been trying to find some.

  • Around 1 year.

We started "coloring" with finger paint in the bath tub around 9 months.  When I did that with DD I would offer a paintbrush and see if she was interested.  Around 11 months she started being really interested in painting with a brush.  After that I offered crayons.

  • DD started coloring at 15 months. When we go to restaurants she would try to eat them before then so I waited. We bought her a color book with 4 crayons and she colored and held the crayon the right way. She used chalk outside at 11 months when she started walking, she would hit the sidewalk with it and then clap bc she thought it was pretty.
  • DD started around 15/16 months? Now she loves coloring!

You can try at 1. DS just ate And threw them for a while, and even at 19 months, he's not that interested in them now. Every kid is different.

  • Both of mine were around 19 months when they were actually interested in crayons.  Probably closer to 20 months.  DD will actually ask for them.  Colors to her is cuh-cuh.  She will point at the box and say that and also bring me a coloring book.
Both like to lick the crayons and try to eat them but we're getting over that.  DS likes to put them on the slide and push them down the slide.  He also likes to put them in a group and mush them around or throw them.  So less like crayons and more like projectiles.  lol
DD scribbles in her coloring books.  She likes to use every color.
The fun with twins is the sneakiness.  While DS is projectiling crayons, DD will steal one and hide it in their room.  Then when they are playing in their room she will be sneaky and color on the walls and door.  Luckily crayola comes off very easily but I've had to become guard of the crayons so this stops.

  • The only interest DD has in them is to eat them right now and she is 18 months old.  She loves her magna doodle though but hasn't quite gotten the hang of the crayons.

  • DD is 16 months and loves to scribble, she still randomly eats the crayons or bites the tips off. I just redirect her or only let her have one. She's less likely to destroy the only one she has.
