Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Time off work after d & c

Just wondering how long you all took off work after your d & c? This is my second miscarriage in 4 months. Physically I'm recovering just fine... Mentally is a slower process...

Re: Time off work after d & c

  • I'm so sorry for your losses. I only took the day of the procedure (a Wednesday) and day after (Thu) off, then went back the next day (Friday). In some ways, it was a good distraction to go back since no one there knew, but I was definitely in a bit of a fog mentally. I'm glad you're feeling better physically and I hope the mental will follow soon.

  • I'm sorry for your losses.  I took the day of (Fri) and day after (Sat) then went into work on Sunday for 6 hours followed by the whole next week off because I had already taken that week for vacation.  I felt okay physically, but by that Monday my emotions were all over the place.  I hope you begin to feel better soon.

  • I find out on a Friday and then took the whole next week off. I had the D&C that Thursday and was back to work by Monday. Physically I was fine even the day after the procedure but I'm glad I took the week. My work knew about the loss and they were all very understanding.

  • I would say it really depends on the job and your employer. When I was working I would take the day after surgery off and then go back because I managed group homes and mostly sat at one of the homes all day doing paperwork and if I wasn't feeling well I could lay on the couch. But before that job I was doing a lot more physically demanding work and I would take off 2-3 wks because I had to be cleared to lift 50 lbs.

  • I am fortunate enough to have a manager who encouraged me to work from home during this ordeal.  I only took the day of off (a Friday) and then worked from home Monday and Tuesday.  I also worked from home the Tuesday through Thursday before my D&C since I was so emotional.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.  My D&C was a week ago today, so I've only been back in the office for two full days but I do feel that it has been helpful to get back into a routine.

Work was a bit all over the place for me during the time leading up to and after my mc. I actually only took the day of and the day after my d&c off work. I then went back to work for a day (and felt fine) but the day after I began experiencing nerve pains caused by the surgery which meant I was off work for the following 2 days. I found out about my miscarriage 2 weeks before my d&c and had that entire first week following my diagnosis off work at my boss's insistence because emotionally I was a total wreck. All up I had 9 days in total off work because of my mc but technically only 2 days off for my d&c. It totally depends on the individual woman. Physically most will be fine to return to work almost immediately but emotionally I think you should take all the time you need.
