2 Vessel Cord...Should I be worried??

Yesterday my doctor called with the results of my 20 week ultrasound. He said everything looked good, just that he noticed I have just a 2 vessel cord. Instead of 4. He said that when that happens, the artery is larger so it makes up for the blood flow age bc it's bigger obviously. Just to be safe, he is sending me to get a fetal echo. Growth is normal (actually the baby is 3 ounces bigger then the average at this time in pregnancy). But, of course I googled this 2 vessel cord thing. Although, almost all my research is all positive, I did come across very few cases where the baby resulted in a still birth at 30+ weeks. It's rare supposedly, but obviously I don't want to know that I even have a 1% chance in that. My perinatologist is going to be monitoring me closely every few weeks, even though he said it's nothing to be concerned about. But, still! I would like to know if anyone has had experience having a 2 vessel cord with previous pregnancies? This baby does kick like crazy, so at least that makes me happy, that it's a very active, energetic baby. Heartbeart is always 150+. Please share your experiences, I'd love to read about them.

Stay off Google and listen to your doctor. I know that hearing other people stories might seem comforting but that won't really TELL you anything. If you are super concerned, call and speak to someone at your doctor's office. GL.

I agree. I know that the first thing you want to do is get all of the information you can, anywhere you can. We all do it. But your doctor is going to give you all the information you need. You will no doubt find hundreds of positive stories, but you will also find the negative ones you don't need to be listening to right now.

Just trust your doctor and I'm sure that everything will be fine! T&P to you. :)

  • Yep, my DD had a 2 vessel cord. She was born perfectly healthy without any problems. The only thing different would have been a few extra ultrasounds to check on growth (which I would have had anyway because of my diabetes).
I was told that it's fairly common and in the 20 years my ultrasound tech had worked she had never seen a poor outcome from this condition.
Try not to worry too much and DO NOT google this, it will just make you worry needlessly.

    FYI: It's a 3 vessel cord not 4 vessel.

Thank you for your kind words. Yeah....I thought I had heard the doctor say 4 yesterday. But, I did realize it was 3 when doing my research. I will not google this anymore. LOL...you know how we mommies worry all the time about our little ones :) Again, thank you for sharing your experience with me!

  • If your doctor told you that everything was good then why are you hunting down sad stories on google?

I understand the worry, but your doctor would absolutely tell you. Please don't borrow trouble. CTFD.

  • The thing is no matter what happens there is always a chance of spontaneous delivery or still birth in any pregnancy.

Listen to doctors because they know and have seen far more accurately than google.
  • I'm 36+ weeks and I also have a 2 vessel cord! I payed for a private 4d scan at 27 weeks and that's when I found out, my doc is doing growth scans, you can't help but worrie I'm still worried now! I'm sure both are baby's will be ok :) xxx

Yea, he has me going for a fetal echo, and then I also have an ultrasound scheduled in May and again in July...I'm due early September, so he may even have me do another ultrasound in August. I'm trying to be very positive, and it seems to be something that is pretty common. So, that makes me feel better. How has your baby's growth been so far? Normal I hope. I am sure our babies will be just fine :)

Yes to all of this. My son is 3 weeks old now, completely healthy. He had a two vessel cord (also called sua) & other risk factors but is totally fine. I worried needlessly.

  • My DD is 5.5 now and had SUA - another healthy one with no complications :)

  • Yeah my baby's growth has been fine so far, got another growth scan next week, what's a fetal echo? Is that a scan on baby heart? Because Iv asked about this and they said I don't need one? I going to bring this up again when I see the doc after my growth scan. X
  • Fetal echocardiogram, I believe. I thinkthey offer some moms that to make sure the heart is okay, but I haven't actually heard of any link between that & sua.

  • I went for another growth scan yesterday and my fluid is at 2.8, I'm going for another tomrrow & if it's any lower there starting me off, her growth has also slowed down! X

He wants me to get the Fetal Echo to make sure he is getting enough blood supply to his heart, since I only have a 2 vessel cord. How far along are you? I pray that everything is good and healthy with your baby. Please keep me posted.

Such great news! Glad to hear your baby is good. I have my fetal echo on May 5th. I'm a little nervous. Thankfully, this baby is super active in my belly, and that makes me feel better :) I've heard many times that mommies with 2 vessel cords are delivered at 38 weeks. Let me know if that's the case with you. KIT! xo

  • I delivered at 38 weeks naturally with my sua baby.

Anything below 5cm of amniotic fluid is generally considered dangerous & many practitioners will deliver the baby at that point, especially if you're past 34 weeks. I'm glad they're keeping a close eye on you, but I'd honestly ask them about the risk of cord accidents with such low fluid & a 2 vessel cord. I was monitored bc I had low fluid & was told that below a 5 warranted induction.

  • I am 25w1d and have SUA. We were referred to a specialist after our 20 week u/s to verify that there weren't any other abnormalities. That scan showed a perfectly healthy baby. This week, we went back to the perinatologist for a fetal echo. That scan showed a perfectly healthy baby heart. I will start growth scans at 32 weeks, and while she is measuring small at the moment (40th percentile), it isn't anything to be worried about. <P>

I admit, I went to the same place you did emotionally -- flipped out and got to googling. My perinatologist says she sees 5 of these a week, that there is nothing that I need to do differently, and most cases are full-term, perfectly healthy babies. <P>

    Good luck!
