Tommy's Birth Story, PIP (mandiroo)

Short version:

Thomas Kenneth was born Tuesday, April 8 at 11:16 pm. He weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and was 18 inches long. We are home, doing well and are head over heels in love with our baby boy.

Long version:

I was scheduled for an induction last Tuesday at 1:15 pm. The hospital called me at 12:30pm and told me rooms were full and to stay at home until they called me back and had a room for me. I sat on the couch, disappointed but hopeful that they’d call soon. Around 3:30 pm I started having regular contractions and at 4:30 I told my husband we were going to the hospital anyway and not coming home without a baby. We got there and were in a room at 6:00pm. The nurse said monitors were showing regular contractions every 2-3 minutes. I was dilated to 4 cm, was 70% effaced and at a -2 station. My Dr. ordered a low dose of Pitocin to keep things regular and at 7:00pm she broke my water and by 7:30 an epidural was administered. I felt wonderful after that. I had an epi with my DD, but it didn’t take on one side so it wasn’t a comfortable experience at all. This time it totally did the job and I was able to relax. A couple hours later I was at 6 cm and baby was still high so my Dr. adjusted my bed so I was sitting up and gravity could do its job. By 10:30pm I was feeling a huge urge to push. I called the nurse in and she checked me and said I was close, at 9 ½ and baby was right there and to give it another 30 minutes. The urge to push was so strong I was gripping the bed sheets and trying with all my might to hang on a little longer. I called the nurse back at 10:55pm and told her it was go time. My Dr. was in the room 2 minutes later. I started pushing at 11:02 and Tommy arrived at 11:16 pm! I was thrilled with how quick it all went. I ended up having a 2^nd degree tear, but had worse with DD so I was happy with that. Tommy is doing well and we’re adjusting to life with a newborn again. He’s nursing well, but his latch sucks, so we’re working on that. Big sister is so excited to have him home, as are we.
