Baby in 6th percentile at 31wks

Hey girls so I went to my ultrasound a couple days ago and the doctor said my baby girl is in the 6th percentile of growth. I'm 31 weeks and 2days and I go back on the 25th to see how she is doing the doctor said they will most likely deliver me between 37-39wks I'm nervous has this happened to any of you without any other markers showing something could be wrong. Cause for me they didn't see anything other then her size.

I think you have answered your own question. Like salty said, the range exists because babies are all over it. My kid is still in the 5% for his age. Some babies are just small. GL with everything.

  • This is a stupid question so I apologize but can someone explain percentiles to me, what does that mean? My OB didn't say anything to me yet! I blame this stupid question on lack of sleep and pregnancy brain!!! Thanks!!
  • I actually got the opposite news that my baby is measuring huge and they're worried about GD and all this other crap....well a big *in yo face* to the MFM peeps because my glucose test came in at 95 not even close to their 130 cutoff.  So baby is just gigantic, which would explain my ever-aching back.  I think it's normal, and like PPs said there's a range for a reason and I wouldn't worry about it unless they told you she's not doing well otherwise.

I got the same news and I was waiting for a post so i didn't SS.  My guy measured 4.5lbs at 30 weeks which placed him 3 weeks ahead and 95%.  I was freaking out.  However, the MFM said these scans this early can be very off by a pound or more.
  • My bf's sister had a baby 6 weeks ago and they delivered 3 weeks early because she was tiny. They said the ultimate cause for her size was momma's placenta wasn't delivering the full level of nutrients it needed but that wouldn't have changed her size too much. Mom is 4'11 and dad is 5'3, so they were just smaller people that made a smaller baby.

At 3 weeks early, their girl was 4lbs 5oz and 19in. My 5'8 sister delivered her baby 3 weeks early and she came out 8lbs 2oz, 20in. Babies fluctuate all over the size spectrum like people do.

  • I went for a growth ultrasound 5 1/2 weeks ago because I was measuring too big. My baby was in the 85th percentile, weighing in at 3lbs and 2 weeks 2days ahead. I had to go back a week and a half ago and at 30 weeks 4 days he was measuring at 66th percentile and 3lbs 14oz measuring 5 days ahead. They also told me that this time he had a little extra fluid, they said could be from my GD, my sugars have been pretty good too. Babies change too much so they'll need repeat ultrasounds to keep track. Side note, my SIL was told she was going to have a 13-14lb baby and had a c-section. They baby only weighed 10lbs 6oz.

Its a statistical thing.  Medical professionals take all the babies and put their size (lbs) on a standard bell curve.  95th percentile would mean your baby is bigger than 95% of other babies of the same age.  6th percentile means your baby is bigger than 6% of babies.  There are fewer and fewer babies in the tails of the curve and the most babies fall in the middle (aka 50th percentile).

That's the easiest way to describe that I can think of but if any one else wants to jump in, feel free.

U/S size estimates are completely subjective.  I was told my daughter was 95th and would be over 9 lbs.  She came out at 7lbs 7 oz.  Skinny as a rail.  I was totally flipping out over a 9lb baby unnecessarily.

    Thanks for explaining it! :-)
