Found out today that I'm a carrier for cystic fibrosis!!!

Hi ladies, Today I found out that I'm a carrier for CF. My husband will be getting tested this week. They say if his tests come back negative, we have nothing to worry about, but if they come back positive, there's a 25% chance we will have a baby with CF. Anyone else in the same boat?

My SIL and her BF were both carriers. Her DD did end up having CF. She has learned a lot. Since you will know going into the hospital, the doctors will be able to make a quicker dx. The main concern was baby gaining weight in the beginning. She has breathing treatments, chest pounding (SIL taps one her chest, back and sides), and enzymes to help her digest food. She is a thriving baby. CF research has come a long way. It is not like it used to be.

Fingers crossed that he is not a carrier! Odds are that he isn't, & even if he is, you might fall in the 75%. One of my best friends was a carrier, as well as her husband, & they had no idea until their firstborn baby had CF. It is definitely hard, but not the end of the world even if that were to happen. He is a beautiful, hilarious, SUPER smart kid

If your asking me, I don't know yet. I talk to a genetic counselor on Sunday. I will also probably talk to my dr. There is a simple blood test they can do when the baby is born to tell if he/she has it so I'm not sure how necessary it is. However, if it means I might need to change my diet, then yes. He will get tested.

hoping for your husband's test to come back negative.

Mine came back with weird / inconclusive results, negative but doesn't rule it out. So it's somewhere between neg and pos. I need to ask more about what this really means at my next Ob appt next week because I'm a bit confused by it and didn't realize you could be somewhere inbetween.

CF treatment has come a long way, and there are more drugs in the works going through approvals, etc right now. I hope your LO doesn't have it, but please know that it's not the end of the world.

Thanks ladies for all of the positive words. My husband goes in for his blood test at 2:30 today so we should know the results in a about a week. I will definitely keep everyone updated.

My cousin is due in October and just found out she is a CF carrier last week. Her husband's test results haven't come back yet, but odds are on your side. She said there are 26 million carriers in the US and only thousands with the disease. And think about how big your family is and you probably dont have anyone with CF in it. stay positive if you can. But waiting is the hardest part. T&P to you!

I haven't posted anything since my second was born, so I have a feeling my tickers are all screwed up, so I apologize! But I am a CF carrier, so we had DH tested with our first. He wasn't a carrier, and so no worries for us. If you and DH are of similar ethnic backgrounds the chances of him being a carrier of the same CF strain as you increase slightly. Good luck!
