Night in Baby's Room

For those who have LO in their own room at night, what is your lighting situation? Do you have it pitch black? Use a dim lamp?

We have two night lights but both turn off after a half hour or so, meaning they're not lit when baby wakes at night. He seems upset in the super dark room, so I've been thinking maybe we need a change. Curious as to what others do.

Re: Night in Baby's Room

  • We have two huge skylights in the room so it's a very calm/soft light that comes in at night. I personally prefer a room that is pitch black; don't know about LO..

  • We have a lamp on the floor on the far side of the dresser so it's pretty dim. I've always slept with a lamp on, so my babe has too.
  • We just have a cheapo plug in nightlight which is on all night. I leave his door open a crack too so a little light from the hallway and entry window creeps in.

He now can't sleep unless it's pretty dark, including for naps.
  • Very dark

  • When we are doing bath, pajamas, story time and offering his last bottle we use a very dim lamp. Once he finishes his last bottle we turn that off and I lie him down. The shades are drawn and I even have to put a blanket over the lights on his fan/filter. He is very stimulated by light so it has to be really dark for him to sleep at night.

When we do MOTN feedings and diaper changes we use no light.
  • @JoeLies‌ if it's the lamp I think it is I wanted that for LOs nursery but didn't end up getting it- it's so cute!

We have a lamp in the dresser with a 20watt bulb but at night I turn on the home medics sound machine which has a projector- it projects onto the ceiling just enough light.

Although LO has been sleeping terribly lately so after reading these posts I may try total darkness and see if that helps, I'll turn on the projector when I need to nurse
  • We have two wall sconces in the nursery and we put one on a dimmer when we installed them. It has been a life saver. We keep the lights dim when we are in there with her for MOTN feeding. It gives us enough light to see what we're doing but not enough to wake her up more. When she's asleep we turn off all lights, it doesn't seem to phase her.
  • We replaced a double outlet with an outlet/nightlight combo.  The nightlight's on a sensor, so it's only on when the light is off.  It's behind the glider, so it doesn't shine right in her crib - she's very sensitive to light (an "eye baby," my dad says).

For nursing before bed, we turn the overhead light all the way down, then I turn it completely off after I put her in her crib.  We don't change diapers in the MOTN anymore, except very rarely.  I can do it without turning on the light, but DH has bad eyes, so he has to turn on her lamp.  For MOTN nursing, I don't use any light except what comes from the nightlight.
Same. If I fall asleep with a light or TV on I am very disoriented when I wake. In general, I need it to be very dark to sleep well. I even put a pillow in front of the cable box at night so those tiny little specks of light don't bother me.
  • We have a sensored night light in there. When we are doing our bedtime routine, we have a light with a dimmer on very dim. If we have to go in in the MOTN the night light is sufficient for us to put her back down.
