Baby Names

Is Lydia too close to Lilla?

DD1 is Elizabeth. We sometimes call her Lilla, because when she was smaller that was all she could make of Elizabeth. I don't know if it's a nn that will last a lifetime, and only DH and I use it.

If baby #3 is a girl, I really like Lydia, but wonder if Lydia and Lilla are too similar sounding if Lilla happens to stick as a nn.

We could always drop Lilla as a nn, but I quite like that it's a nn that just developed naturally. There are so many nn options with Elizabeth, and we always said we wouldn't pick one, that as she grew and made friends she would naturally develop her own.

Thoughts?

Re: Is Lydia too close to Lilla?

  • Lydia and Lilla are too close, but now you're comparing a nn to a full given name. Lilla is a nn only you and your DH use. When introducing them, they are Elizabeth and Lydia and that makes a wonderful sibset. Also, it's very possible that Lydia will have a nn too and Lilla and Lyddie is adorable. So I'd say go for it!

  • Since Lilla is a nn, I think its fine. Elizabeth and Lydia is a wonderful sibset!

  • I think it doesn't matter as much for a nn, as you said, it's mainly you and your H's pet name, so that could change as she gets older.

I love Lydia a lot. It's been on my list for years.

However, then you'd have an Elizabeth, Jane, and Lydia. Even if you didn't get it from a book, they're pretty linked names, so I'd be prepared for everyone to think you really love Jane Austen. (but it is a great sibset, so great minds think alike)

  • Not an issue especially since comparing a NN.

I think Lydia has the "Lid" sound and Lilla has the "Lee" sound which are completely different.
