Multiples

Would you say 30-35 weeks is too late for Childbirth classes? Or just fine?

Our hospital offers a once a week, 4-week multiples class, and they want everyone to be at least 26 weeks on the first day of the class.   Normally they offer them once a month, but it turns out that they won't be offering the class at all in July (summer holidays I guess) and will instead be offering them in the month of June and not again until mid-August.

So based on their rule we'd be too early for the June class (20weeks at the start), but will be 30 weeks at the start of the August class, and 35 weeks by the time it ends in September (we lose a week there for Labour day weekend).   That seems a bit late to me with twins though - does it to you?    Even if the babies are still cookin' by the time 35 weeks rolls around (and quite frankly, the midwife has already told me to hope for it, but not to plan for it) --- a 3 hour class from 6:30-9:30pm seems like a bit of a stretch.

What do you guys think?  They opened registration this week for the summer sessions so we've been advised to book early.

Re: Would you say 30-35 weeks is too late for Childbirth classes? Or just fine?

  • Even for twins they won't let you take the class in your second tri? I would call and ask them if they would make an exception for you (explain the timeline). If they won't ask and make sure they will reimburse you if you can't make the class (early birth or bed rest). Maybe your doctor can write you a note?

I am almost 38 weeks, so I would said yes, 30-35 weeks is fine, but you just never know about that bed rest!

  • I started getting way too miserable at 30 weeks and couldn't have dealt with classes. Also, I delivered at 32 weeks. I'd ask for an exception and go to the early class or find another place that offers a birth class!

  • I was already on hospital bed rest at 30 weeks so that would not have worked for me.  As it was, I was so uncomfortable sitting through the class we went to at 27 weeks.

  • I had the same problem last summer. I didn't make it to my class in sept bc I was on bed rest. Call and see if they will make an exception. They should.

  • Thanks for the answers! My instinct told me it would probably be too uncomfortable/late but I wasn't sure if I was just being too cautious.

  • I would see if you can do the early class, our multiples class suggests doing it in the 4th or 5th month of pregnancy.

  • Yeah, definitely call and see if they can make an exception. I would have delivered before I could have even taken a single session of that course, based on that timeline. ;)
