7 month EBF "schedule" question

Hi ladies! Thanks so much for this amazing board. You all offer so much. I read this board every.single.day! I was just hoping to gain some insight from BTDT moms or moms who have kiddos in the same age range as my DD. I have a 7m old (next week) who is EBF. She nurses a lot and takes typically 3 bottles while at daycare. She is usually at daycare 7 hrs a day and averages 13 ounces. Her first bottle is 5, then 4 & 4. She eats every two hours at day care. Daycare is asking me to up her bottles because "they've never seen an 7 month old eat every two hours still and why won't I send baby food for more calories." We are doing BLW at home so I am not sure I am ready for daycare to do it yet. I am not sure that she needs more milk to daycare. For a while she was sleeping 7p-1a-5a-7/8a. She ate all those wake ups too. Meroe recently she has been waking up every 3-4 over night. I think we already got through a growth spurt so I don't think we are mid spurt. Is she not getting enough calories? I don't mind the wake ups, I just want to do what is right and best. Both daycare and I are feeding her on demand. Any thoughts, suggestions or feedback would be great! Don't mind my outdated signature!

I also figured from looking back over the last few days she eats about 9x in a 24 hour period. Three of those feedings are bottles and 6 are nursing sessions. She doesn't take any bottles on the weekend. I guess when I say nurses a lot, looking back it's not that much. This is also a post and run for a few hours. I am off to work.

  • Thanks for the reply. I guess my concern is that she'll take two five ounce bottles and end up only eating 10 ounces. I guess it can't hurt to play around with it. I just don't want to be over feeding her.

  • You could try upping them all to 4 1/2 ounces. I would not send more than 3, 5 oz bottles, though. My DS never took more than 3 41/2-5oz bottles. We did BLW as well. Once DS was about 7 months, we started sending a very small amount of yogurt and/or applesauce, or some banana, in addition to the bottles. We didn't think our DCP provider would be confortable with full-on BLW, so we sent "easy" things. You could also try oatmeal mixed with a little BM. We also made sure not to send very much table food so he didn't fill up on it. We focused more on the actual BLW at home in the evenings.

I signed in off my phone. Hope its still my ceowife account :-) how did daycare do with BLW? Did they do the preloaded spoon? Shes great with grabbing spoon and clearing it. She currently throws spoon when its empty. We have an in home provider and I'm not sure based on previous discussion shes on board. She does not understand why she cant just feed her. I said to H that I am interpreting her wanting to up the bottles bc feeding so often is inconvenient. I love her daycare otherwise.

We did tell our DCP about letting DS take the lead for BLW, but i'm sure she did some spoon feeding. That's why i was saying to send smaller portions so they won't overfeed. Your DCP is working for you, so she's going to have to deal with it if she finds the schedule inconvenient. ;) you might want to mention that BM is digested more quickly than formula, so BF babies need to eat more often. But i don't think it will cause any harm to your BLW strategy to send food that can be fed to your LO. It worked out fine for us. Once they're a little more coordinated you can send chunks of fruit or cheese that she could eat on her own. It is a little tricky at this stage with balancing the bottle oz and transitioning in some solids, but it'll get easier!
  • I have been sending 2 5oz bottles for LO, but she also eats purees at 10am.  LO nurses in the morning, two bottles at her nanny's, then she nurses two or three more times at home, and has at least 1 MOTN feeding.  She eats dinner at 7pm.  I would send something easy to DC maybe, but if you aren't ready, don't let them rush you.  We are making our own food and sending that.  I don't see the harm in sending more milk though.  Try an extra half oz at a time, until you get to what seems like a good amount for your LO.

  • Thanks for the answers ladies. I added more to yesterday's bottles after the morning posts. She dropped a night feed last night. I added more today again. She is still eating all three bottles so no harm in only fitting in two. Here's to hoping she sleeps well again!

  • My lo is 5 months so not quite as old but eats every 2 hours during the day and every 2.5-3 hours at night. I'm a sahm so she doesn't get bottles regularly but even on days that she does I can feed her til she refuses the bottle and she still eats two hours later. Don't feel pushed into anything you don't want to do! But if adding some helped your lo drop a night feed go for it! Sleep would be awesome!
