Toddler dropping nursing sessions -- WCM?

My 17 month old recently dropped from 3-4 nursing sessions per day to just 2, one in the morning and one before bed.  She usually eats pretty well during the day, and I give her whole milk cheeses and yogurt.  Do I need to get her drinking WCM or something similar to make up for the dropped nursing sessions?  I've offered it a couple times, but she doesn't seem interested.

I'm just concerned that she needs the calories and fats from milk, and that two nursing sessions a day aren't enough.  I hadn't given much thought to weaning or transitioning until she stopped asking to nurse during the day, and now I feel unprepared.

Re: Toddler dropping nursing sessions -- WCM?

  • WCM is really optional if your toddler has a balanced diet and is still nursing. I think you're fine with the yogurt and cheese. This article makes some good points: https://alphamom.com/parenting/baby/switching-from-breastmilk-to-milk/
  • I weaned a month ago and DS is still not a big WCM drinker. I offer WCM at meal times. He drinks a total of 8oz max divided into 3 meals, I do make him a big smoothie for snack however - it has 4oz milk and 4oz yogurt and he downs it in no time.

  • Thank you, everyone.  I will probably offer WCM but not push it.  Last time she spit it all out and now cries when she sees the cup, so I'm glad she doesn't really need it!
