Should I be worried?

About a lack of poop?
LO will be 5 weeks tomorrow. Has been Exclusively breast fed until last Wednesday. Went through a crazy spell after several days of extreme fussiness & other things. I decided to buy a small amount of formula to give once a day at his hungriest times when it seemed I just couldnt fill him up. I got a premixed bottle of similac alimentum. I also cut Dairy a week or so ago.
We did take him to the dr due to the screaming/gagging/constant spit up. He told us he feels problems are most likely due to colic.

My questions is about BM's. LO was having very regular, normal breast fed baby poops. The fussier he got over the last week the smaller each BM became though. Since Wednesday he has had 2 BM's. the first was friday & was normal In size & color. More pudding like than the seedy breastmilk poop. The only other time was this am. Maybe quarter to half dollar sized, normal color but more pasty.
LO has only had 2-4oz per day of the formula. Only breastmilk the rest of the time. And im not pumping so idk how much.
Is it normal for his BM's to decrease so drastically? Hes also become invreasingly gassy & fussy since Thursday.

Re: Should I be worried?

  • How long did it take before getting to once a day? And was she crazy fussy/gassy?
I know the dr thinks my LO has Colic so i know he's an extra fussy kid. Just wondering.

  • DS1 was super mellow. I sure miss that.
He seemed painful & had a big hard belly last night but not today. One poop a week sounds terrible lol
  • Yeah he was pooping great until I introduced the Alimentum. We shall see.....

At this age they start pooping less.  LO just went 9 days without a poop - finally used a glycerin suppository at that point!  With an EBF baby, you call after 8 days without poop.  Formula fed is more like 3 days, as they're more likely to actually experience constipation.

So, since you're mostly BF, I'd say call if you don't get a poop for 4 days or so.

  • DS1 would go 5-7 days between poops and was completely ok. It is normal for BF babies to go days between poops.

  • DD is on Alimentum and is having all types of pooping problems. it's definitely made her poops thicker so she gets prune juice in 2 bottles a day but it's still killing her stomach. she goes several days without a poop and then it's a huge explosion. we're going back to the dr Tuesday. OP, is there a reason you chose Alimentum? have you tried Similac Soy first or did your pedi recommend Alimentum? I really think that's the culprit.

  • Im thinking it is too..
Chose it bc it said for colic. Dr says LO's issues-screaming for hours when nothing is wrong essentially- is most likely colic. So i thought we'd give it a shot.
I started using Mylicon last night bc so gassy. Seems to be helping poor kid. Along with gripe water when super screamy. Helps too. But i dont like this no pooping. I wouldbe bitchin too if i didnt go for days.
I think when the premixed bottle is gone i may not give anything for a week or two & see how he does. Maybe.
