In actuality, I don't refer to it as "just" jibber jabbering. I am happy that he is now consistently using consonant sounds as well as meaningless vowel sounds. He isn't even 9 months old, I don't really expect him to have "vocabulary words".
Ah hem. That "just jibber jabber" is the fundamental building blocks for our babies to learn how to produce individual sounds and then couple them into different utterance shapes and lengths forming the basis for their future communication skills. The typical developmental acquisition includes predominately vowels and bilabials (i.e. B/P/M) in isolation as well as in couplets. CV or CVCV (consonat vowel - i.e. mama, baba, papa as well as other "easy" and early developing sounds such as "dada") are traditionally heard at this stage before they gain regular meaningful use. They also continue to play with raspberries and other faces/sounds which also aids their speech language development. Pairing these productions with meaningful things (pointing to daddy, petting the dog, rolling the ball) help the babies turn that jibber jabber into meaningful vocabulary with intent.
J13 babies are all very advanced and speaking and voice texting each other in phrases already.
Hi ladies!
How many words can your baby say? Or are they still just jibber jabbering?
If they are talking, what words can they say?
Adelynn is up to 5 words now: Mama, Dada, baba, Papa, and she just starting saying dog today. )
Congratulations, @amymichelleh13! Five words! You must be the most amazing mother on the board!
Please, impart upon us your wisdom so that we can all teach our less amazing LOs and raise their communication above the level of *pointing nose up* "just jibber jabbering."
Only 5 words? I'm sorry, but my child has moved passed speaking and is now practicing her calligraphy. We can do your next baby shower invitations if you'd like...

The twins have their own language. I couldn't say for sure, but I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 words and some raspberries. Your LO might be a bit behind the majority of the J13 babies, OP.
Well I totes did not know that saying "mama, dada, baba, and papa" meant my kid was talking.

This is exactly what I was thinking. WTF is "baba" and how did you decide it counts as a word?
And I refuse to believe that a baby would pick up both Dada and Papa as first words, because they're both the same thing! Maybe a BTDT can correct me if I'm wrong here but I feel like if baby actually knows what dada means she's just going to call DH dada and not start throwing in other words for variety.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong when Rosalind's first sentence is "Yo pops, give me some milk"
To be fair here, DD calls my H daddy and my dad (her grandpa), papa. So dada and papa do refer to different things, not like she was interchanging what she was calling H. Though in the case of OP, I'm sure her child is bright enough to do just that.
Wow, seriously?! My original post was not meant to brag, just wanted to see how many other babies my DD's age were doing the same thing... such as recognizing people in their fam and saying their names.. i.e. Mama, Dada, Papa (grandpa), etc. I work full-time outside of the home, so I am not able to join play groups, etc. and do not know many other parents with babies my DD's age. I enjoy reading most of the posts on this board, even if I don't reply to every single story I read.
I do not have much free time to get on The Bump, maybe during my lunch break once a week if that, and that's it. I am not a frequent poster, but I do comment if I feel like I have useful information that might help someone else...or if I have been through something similar. I don't revol in drama, so don't look for me to comment on your posts if all you're doing is bashing someone or complaining about something.
It is ridiculous that grown women can hide behind computer screens, acting immature and bashing other people who have the same interests.
Rise above and be a bigger person, and for goodness sakes, grow up!!!

So you admit that your comments need to be risen above and come from a small minded person, @amymichelleh13?
And as to "hiding" behind screens - have you found the secret key to enter the lovely interwebs in person? Please, have your baby tell us how to interact in person without our computer screens.

FKA mimi4347: diaper rash magician and unofficial expert on excrement
This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts! DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome. 131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
Also - Luke's first word was "gastroschisis," followed closely by "bilirubin."
He has recently added "poop" to his vocab list. He is one of those advanced babies who understand that one thing can have many names, however, because from time to time he also calls it "stinky-stink" and "shit."

Penelope is taking after her mother and is not only speaking words, but will be spelling them in spelling bees. She currently likes onomatopoeia.
Lottie of awesomeness up in this piece!
