Stuck between 2 names for our son- opinions please! :)

Trey vs. Troy- first baby, due 6/3. For the last 4 months, my DH and I have been set on the name, Trey for our LO. My DH is a 'Jr.' and when debating if we wanted our son to be the III, a nickname that came up was 'Trey', which translates to '3' or 'third' in Italian. We both fell in love with the name and decided it would make a good first name, rather than a nn. We would still have my DH's first name as LO's middle name, so the name symbolizes he is the 3rd generation, even though he won't have the legal "III" after his name.Well, recently, my dear MIL and SIL have been telling my DH that our LO will be made fun of with he name Trey. They fear kids will call him 'ash-tray', 'lunch-tray', etc. And his name will constantly be misspelled. I think their comments are eating at my DH. He came home and wanted to see what i thought about the name Troy- meaning soldier or warrior. I wanted to see if anyone has a LO with the name Trey, and if they experience any teasing about the name. Also, your opinions on Troy vs. Trey as a first name. Thank you ladies!

I love the name Trey! I know two Treys and they have never been made fun of for their name. I would never think that this name would be an issue in terms of bad nicknames. Troy is not my style at all.

I've never been a fan of Trey for some of the reasons you mentioned. I like Troy.

i have known a trey and a tripp who were named such because they were the third. i love the trend and think that it a creative way to avoid two of the same names in one house.  

i also think your in laws are ridiculous.

We also are have a III and were between naming him Bobby or Trip (short for triple) I didn't like Trey, but not bc I think he would get teased.  Its just not my style either.  I prefer Troy, or Trip if you want to throw in a third option!

Any name could be twisted to be used against someone. Trey is a very normal name and therefore that shouldn't be your worry. I don't particularly mind either trey or troy, but I don't think you should change just because there are other words that you can make a compound word from by using the name.

If it were a weird, unusual name and you had the same concerns... It might be worth changing for. But trey is normal. More normal than Troy I think.

You can make fun of almost any name. I encourage you to pick a name because you like it and feel it, not based off of "what if's". I like Trey a little more than Troy, but think both are great names!

Love Trey! Had a good friend named Trey and always thought it was uber cool! Don't listen to your in laws- they already got to name their kids:)

Love Trey!! Plus it has a good meaning for you guys!! Regardless of what name a child has, there are going to be negative nn's, so don't go by that, go with whatever name you love!

Neither is really my style but I grew up with a number of Treys (who were IIIs) -really common nickname in the South.

I like trey. Any name can be made fun of and I don't see trey as a name that is asking to be made fun of. It's a normal name. If it was one of those really out there you-neek names I would say change it.

It looks like I'm in the minority and give Troy a vote! I am a bit biased knowing both a Troy and a Trey.. The Troy I know is such a sweet man and fantastic father

I don't think the name would be made fun of. Also that's the only way I would spell it.

Before I read your post I was going to vote for Troy over trey - but after hearing the reason behind trey - I love it!!! I also agree that any name can be made fun of... Kids are creative...

When I hear Troy I think of High School Musical. So do with that what you will.

I would name him a third (same as dad) but call him Trey. My nephew is Trey and the school, friends, etc all call him Trey and probably don't know his "real" name.

honestly i like both but i also like keeping the tradition going.  my dh is the 3rd and he goes by tripp.  my lo will be the 4th too.  i vote for trey

I like Trey!! Go with your gut! Tell your in laws you will decide on a name when you meet him so they don't talk about til you're due! Then tell them he just looked so much like a Trey and not a Troy :-)
