NN for Patrick?

I really like Patrick - but I can't stand the thought of "Pat" or any of the other common NNs. We have a Christopher and so far we've managed to avoid NNs. If a nickname is unavoidable, do you think I could get "Rick(y)" to catch on instead of "Pat"?
I understand Rick is normally short for Richard.

I really like Patrick, no nn. If someone calls him Pat, I would just say "it's actually just Patrick."
I'll try this route first for sure. I'd prefer no NN at all, but it's school I worry about.

  • I know a little boy named Patrick who uses Patch as a nn. I happen to love it. Just throwing it out there!

  • You might get the the occasional person calling him by a nickname, but if you are firm, most people will call him Patrick. DD is Evangeline and we do not call her bya. Nickname. It took some repetition and some explanation, but everyone that sees her on a regular or semi regular basis class her Evangeline.

  • Our older son has a friend named Patrick and he goes by Packy (it is Irish) . Fits him well. Our younger son( 11yo) has a best friend named Patrick , no nn at all, never has had anyone call him Pat at school either. The kids will call him what you introduce your child as to them.
  • Yes, I'd much prefer Rick or Ricky to Pat, as well.

  • I voted that Rick can work, but frankly, I don't think it needs it. Both of my sons have a Patrick in their grade, and a friend has an 8 yr old Patrick, none go by NNs.

  • Once kid goes to school, if nicknames are going to happen they're going to happen. Maybe your kid will prefer Pat to Rick, or decide to just go by Patrick. It's not something you can control, really.

Meaning: there's nothing wrong with Rick, but if Pat is a deal breaker I'd suggest going with a different name entirely.

  • It'll stick if you use it. I also like and know a few Patrick's just going by Patrick.
