Saving Baby Things

First a question - we have a bassinet that's been handed down through generations of DH's family and it's great.  2 out of 3 of our kids used it.  DS2 used a moses basket that sits in a cradle-style rocker (the ILs never gave us the family bassinet for him).  I'd like to save the Moses basket/cradle for if he ever has children, but do you think a woven basket would hold up over 20-30 years?!

Second, what things do you have that were passed down?  What things do you hope to pass down?

Re: Saving Baby Things

  • Like @SgrRay929, the only heirloom type of thing we have is a Baptism gown. It was worn my uncle, my mom, and my aunt. My mom wanted to use it for my brother and I but my grandma couldn't find it. After both of my grandparents had passed and my mom was helping to clean out their house, she found the gown. We used it for DS and will use it again for DD, then will save it for their children.

  • My MIL saved EVERY piece of clothing, most toys, baby bedding (care bears), crib bumper.... omg... DH's entire childhood was in his parent's attic (only child). We donated/threw away 99% of the items due to safety issues/wear & tear over time etc.

    The things we kept-
    1. A wooden rocking horse made by DH"s great grandpa used by FIL, DH, and now our two sons
    2. A wooden rocking chair made by my great grandpa used by my mom, myself, sister, and my boys
    3. A wooden toy  box made for me by my grandpa
    4. DH's & my silver baby cups

I will pass down these items as well. I also saved my boys "going home" outfits

  • My MIL came over with this hideous rocking horse that was DH's as a kid.  I'm sure it's against all sorts of safety regulations now.  Oh, and also, her diaper bag from 1980.

Please use it next time we have lunch. I need to see this!

  • My mom kept a few things from my childhood- but doesn't expect us to use them. If DS was a girl he would be wearing my baptismal gown. Mil offered us DH's outfit from his baptism but it's a little suit so DS can't wear it. I have a baby blanket my grandmother made me, and we will definitely be keeping DS's blanket she made him as well.

I don't have anything else that I know we will be "passing down" but I have a bunch of things that we're keeping for sentimental reasons- the first clothing he was allowed to wear, his eye shades from when he was under he bili light, our hospital bracelets, etc.
I've never been the sentimental type but I can't help but keep these things.

  • I was given DH baby blanket, stuffed animal, and childhood Xmas stocking. Other then my baby blanket, I was not handed down anything. I do plan of making shadow boxes with some of the LO keepsakes. That way they are kept safe, and can been seen, instead of living in a box in storage. I have also been taking a picture every week of LO to make a book out of for the olds.
